GOWANUS by DESIGN ANNOUNCES AN OPEN DESIGN AND PLANNING COMPETITION | The competition will focus on the post-industrial development of a contaminated site in the Gowanus Canal watershed that offers the challenge of rethinking how a new community resource can become an agent for remediation within a diverse urban context. The jury will be comprised of industry professionals and experts in the areas of architecture, sustainable design, landscape design, and community development. CALL FOR PROPOSALS: THE 2ND ANNUAL FOLLY COMPETITION | Socrates Sculpture Park and the Architectural League of New York invite architects and designers to apply for Folly, a design/build studio residency (March-May 2013) leading to an exhibition at Socrates (tentatively opening June 2013). This residency was established to explore the intersections between architecture and sculpture and the increasing overlaps in references, concepts, and techniques between the two disciplines.

IDEAS CITY 2013: TEMPORARY OUTDOOR STRUCTURES | For the occasion of the 2013 IDEAS CITY, Storefront for Art and Architecture jointly with the New Museum and Architizer are launching the StreetFest competition for the design, management, and construction of temporary outdoor spaces that produce new ways for collective gathering and city engagement. On Saturday, May 4, 2013, one winning entry will occupy designated outdoor space along the Bowery near the New Museum during the StreetFest. BRUNNER GRANT | This grant is for the purpose of advancing the study in any area of architectural investigation, which will effectively contribute to the knowledge, teaching or practice of the art and science of architecture. The proposed investigation is to result in a final written work, design project, research paper, or other form of presentation. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen engaged in the profession of architecture or a related field and have received their first professional degree at least five years prior to the date of application. METROPOLIS MAGAZINE NEXT GENERATION DESIGN COMPETITION | This competition was created in 2003 to promote environmental activism, social involvement, and entrepreneurship in young designers. The Next Generation Design Competition is open to any designer or architect in practice for ten years or less, as well as design students. The $10,000 prize is intended to support designers whose entries reflect considerations of inclusive design, systems thinking, sustainability, materials exploration, progressive technologies, function, and provocative form. Each design should speak to at least one or several of the 6 sub-disciplines of design supported by the magazine-architecture, urban planning, landscape design, interior design, product design, and graphic design. Projects of all types, either theoretical or real, and executed in any medium, are welcome. The jury will select work for presentation in lectures, digital media, and an exhibition in June 2013. Winners will receive a cash prize of $1,000. A catalogue of winning work will be published by the Architectural League and Princeton Architectural Press. The Architectural League Prize is an annual competition, lecture series, and exhibition organized by the Architectural League and its Young Architects + Designers Committee. MOMA FILM SCREENING | Diana Agrest's film, The Making of an Avant-garde: IAUS 1967-1984, had a private screening at the Museum of Modern Art in September 2012. Agrest has received grants from the Graham Foundation, NYSCA, the Center for Architecture Foundation and others for the film project, which she has written, directed and produced.
