Massimo Scolari: The Representation of Architecture, 1967-2012 is presented by The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture and organized by the Yale School of Architecture. Additional support for the exhibition is provided by the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, the Turner Foundation, and by Elise Jaffe + Jeffrey Brown.

"To see architecture as profound optimism" is the foundational principle behind the work of Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. The husband-and-wife firm began working together in New York in 1977, establishing their firm nine years later in the same Central Park South studio where they work today. As exemplified by important works like the American Folk Art Museum (2001) and the recently completed Barnes Foundation building in Philadelphia, "matter, light, texture, detail, and most of all experience" are the essence of their architecture. Their architecture is widely appreciated for its sensitivity, timelessness, and beauty.
Their body of work ranges from large cultural institutions to new skating rinks for Brooklyn's Prospect Park, the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University, and the recently awarded commission to design the New Embassy Compound in Mexico City. Parallel to their practice, Williams and Tsien maintain active teaching careers and lecture worldwide.

The leader of the design team for the London 2012 Velodrome, Mike Taylor is a senior partner at Hopkins Architects, founded by Michael Hopkins in 1976. The firm, renowned as pioneers of prefabricated, lightweight, and sustainable architecture, is "guided by deeply-rooted architectural, environmental, and social convictions." The design practice focuses on integrating advanced design, craft, and sustainable solutions-from early conceptual designs through construction. In addition to his role at Hopkins Architects, Taylor has lectured and tutored regularly at United Kingdom schools of architecture and has taught a postgraduate design course at Yale University. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Architectural League of New York.

I had this thought that a memorial should be a room and a garden. That's all I had. Why did I want a room and a garden? I just chose it to be the point of departure. The garden is somehow a personal nature, a personal kind of control of nature, a gathering of nature. And the room was the beginning of architecture. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name co-sponsored by The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture and the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute at The Cooper Union from January 10 - February 18, 2005, this catalogue examines the evolution of Louis I. Kahn's design for the Roosevelt Memorial.

In his lecture, art historian, independent curator and critic David Deitcher discusses "Once More, with Feeling" (a work in progress), his memoire examining the relationship between memory, emotion and forgetting in stories that date as far back as his childhood in Montreal during the 1950s and early 60s. These he weaves together with other accounts relating to the mid-to-late-1980s in New York and to the AIDS crisis, which decimated the generation of gay men to which Deitcher belongs. Surveying works by artists-some well known and many unknown for having died so young-that range across every medium, Deitcher's lecture considers what was at stake in the return of affect and emotion to contemporary works of art that relied not on expressionist rhetoric but on the grammar and syntax of Minimalism and Conceptualism, whose apparently rigorous lack of content and emotion they implicitly critique. The Lyceum Competition welcomes submissions from students attending participating schools including The Cooper Union (complete list of schools here). Lyceum travel awards are intended to enrich the academic experience. As such, all competitors are required to have at least one year of study remaining so that a travel award may be fulfilled prior to the completion of the current or an immediately subsequent architectural degree program. Students should work individually; submissions resulting from individual work completed in a design studio are encouraged.

The competition will focus on the post-industrial development of a contaminated site in the Gowanus Canal watershed that offers the challenge of rethinking how a new community resource can become an agent for remediation within a diverse urban context. The jury will be comprised of industry professionals and experts in the areas of architecture, sustainable design, landscape design, and community development. METROPOLIS MAGAZINE NEXT GENERATION DESIGN COMPETITION | This competition was created in 2003 to promote environmental activism, social involvement, and entrepreneurship in young designers. The Next Generation Design Competition is open to any designer or architect in practice for ten years or less, as well as design students. The $10,000 prize is intended to support designers whose entries reflect considerations of inclusive design, systems thinking, sustainability, materials exploration, progressive technologies, function, and provocative form.
