Americans throw away about a third of their available food. A new facility known as the Heartland Biogas Project is taking wasted food from Colorado's most populous areas and turning it into electricity. 


In May, Whole Foods will launch the chain's first budget grocery in the hipster enclave of Silver Lake in Los Angeles. When it does, it will not only be cheap, but green.



Composting is a magic process where kitchen waste transforms into rich, black soil. Even those of you without one of these magical boxes in the backyard probably know that you can compost fruit and veggie peels, coffee grounds and paper towel - but how about hair? Or balloons?


Food waste has become a major issue in the past year, as awareness of the adverse environmental and social impacts of throwing so much food away just because it was aesthetically unpleasing has become more widely known.
