Walking the Road....

One thing I have noticed is the abundance of fireworks stands here in Missouri, even right in our back yard. Being in Olathe, the use of fireworks, except for public displays, is verboten. Back in Nebraska, however, I took things one step forward, a cannon. Before you think you called a nut to be your priest, let me explain. I enjoyed historical reenacting for many years, portraying the first 50 years of the 1800s. I knew of a place in Union City Tennessee that sold cannons of various sizes. I ordered a small one, which was deliverd bare in the mail box with a toe tag address label on it. My brother-in-law was a cabinet maker and he helped me build a small naval carriage. And I bought a mold to make 75 caliber lead balls. On the 4th of July we shot off the cannon for our celebration, without lead balls of course! They were saved or the shooting range.

Why am I telling you all of this? Sometimes we need a few "purists" to help us remember the true meaning of something. Our Christian faith is no different. Many of us go through life trying to be good Christians. But we need the encouragement of witnesses who are trying to truly be "pure" Christians. St. Benedict was one of those people. He structured his life and the lives of his monk disciples to give total devotion to Christ in their earthly life. Not all of us are called to this way, but we can all gain strength from the model such people as St. Benedict give us. His guidance for prayer can lead us into a closer walk with God, and draw us more into the likeness of Christ. While Benedict's way requires a total commitment to contemplation, his basic principle, ora et labora, prayer and work, can help us realize that it is not so much multiple choice as it is a both-and opportunity, to make God a part of everything we do. So let your prayer be a continual conversation with our Father...

SPECIAL PRESENTATION THIS SUNDAY

On Sunday we celebrate the feast of St. Benedict, who was known for giving his monks a balanced way of life with prayer and active work or "Ora et Labora".  Join Kim Parsons for her presentation entitled,  It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World...and thus the need for "Ora et Labora"following the worship service.

So say your "hey, how are you's" to everyone, then grab your coffee and a snack, and meet in front of the TV on the east side of the narthex.  Kim does a great job - don't miss it.

Notice From the Diocese of West Missouri

St. Mary Magdalene family,

Having served as a family mediator for almost 20 years, I understand how things can turn into conflicts. At times, our human natures can be too naive or too distracted to allow us to hear the needs a of another person and the collisions ensue.

I pray the efforts of the mediator will help everyone involved find a new path and from that journey, discovery of a new understanding and a renewed vision and relationship. Every broken relationship is a relationship losing God's presence.

As you hear me pray every Sunday,

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is
hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where
there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where
there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where
there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to
be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is
in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we
are born to eternal life. Amen.

Dear St Mary Magdalene family,

I am overwhelmed with the love and care this past month by each of you. Thank you for your prayers, cards, memorials and your love filled visits as Eldon traveled to the Ultimate Healing promised to each of us, through Christ our Savior.

St. Mary Magdalene was his first and last earthly church home. He treasured being a part of this loving community.

Thank you for honoring him in so many ways.

Much love,
Mary Cook
