Walking the Road....

Some of you have asked in various ways, "Where is St. Mary Magdalene going?"

In light of the 2½ years of uncertainty and effort you have experienced, that is a proper question, especially for a devoted, dedicated people who have worked so hard to give this parish life. Let me share what I appreciate, and I hope it will help answer your question in both a comforting and encouraging way.

When I came to St. Mary Magdalene, I sensed you needed a period of rest after such a stressful time, to take a breath, to reflect, and to discover what the parish is becoming.

"Becoming" is a good word for us to think about, for that has always been true. While there were visions, and energies were given to those visions, like youthful imagination you were eager to bring to life and reality. But reality can be exhausting. Some of that exhaustion can come from growing pains. And as they say in sports, "No pain, no gain." The stress that always comes from effort may often cause us to fall back on what we already know, rather than what a situation may require. That stress is always part of "becoming". As those of many years are aware, maturity is the discovery of what we are becoming and finding its true spirit to guide us.

Congratulate yourselves on where you have come! As a parish, you are young. Now is the time, with patience and openness to discovery, to take one step at a time into that future you are called to be, what you are becoming.

St. Mary Magdalene is not out there all alone. While your 2½ years may have felt that way, remember you were birthed by the larger Church, brought to life in its nurture, have always been part of its family, now hopefully ready to step forward in a more mature fashion as is required of any youthful living thing. You have always been part of the living organism that is Christ's Body. You have just been experiencing the growing pains of "becoming"!

So take a breath, calm your soul, reflect...and get ready for the future!

Thank you for letting me walk this road with you...

Fr. Evan+

 St. Mary Magdalene in the Community

Since Fr. Evan's coming in February, he discovered that St. Mary Magdalene's presence has gone largely unnoticed in the local community. Yet the key to the future of the parish and its life is for us to minister and witness where we are. It all starts with connecting and discovering where we are.

To help the parish reach out since he started his service to the parish, Fr. Evan has represented St. Mary Magdalene in the community through the following connections,
  • helping the parish became a member of the Belton Chamber of Commerce;* getting St. Mary Magdalene on lists of churches in the area;
  • discussing the community and its needs with Belton Mayor Jeff Davis, a member of his staff, and the City Council, with Belton Police Chief James Person, with Belton Research Hospital CEO Todd Krass;
    • discussions that stimulated the concept of a project of our parish fostering and hosting a "Summit" for dialogue within the church-civic-business community of Belton;
  • building on connections established by Deacon Peisha, engaging other ministers in the community and supporting common ministries;
    • participating in Belton's National Day of Prayer Service at City Hall, offering prayers for families of our community and nation;
  • bringing ministry possibilities to us from Heart-n-Hand Ministries, resulting in
    • our pantry and back-to-school collections, and
    • stimulating networking with Episcopal Community Services to hopefully
    • collaborate on meeting the nutrition needs of people in the community;
  • meeting Beverly Newman, Cass County Juvenile Officer,
    • resulting in a collaboration where 4 young offenders work in our Community Garden each Saturday morning to complete community service hours, where our members minister to them as role models and help them discover the good they are doing through their work;
  • participating in the Cass County Non-Profits Coalition discussions, exploring ways we can be a caring presence;
  • touring the West Central Community Action Agency to learn of their programs and the community's needs;
  • connecting with the Belton Public Schools to discover ways the parish might be a resource to the needs of students and their families, e.g., literacy;
  • based on what Fr. Evan learned thus far, reaching out to parish members to explore ways St. Mary Magdalene might offer a place for support groups for needs yet unmet in the community, e.g., chronically mentally ill, families of young adults with special challenges;
  • supporting our role in the Sophia Ministry of Linda Keith; and
  • reaching out to our neighbors to cultivate connections.

With the help of parish members, Fr. Evan is able to make connections for the parish that help the community know we are here, we care, and we welcome them in Christ's name. This is only the beginning. As we grow in our connections, we will reach out further, to Raymore, Grandview, Loch Lloyd, and beyond.

Remember, if we are doing what God has given us to do, He will, in His loving and generous grace, provide what we need to get the job done! Pray we follow His Spirit's voice.

Organizing for Ministry

During his time at St. Mary Mag, Fr. Evan has discovered the somewhat scattered nature of the parish's numerous ministries. He has also been approached by devoted dedicated people about their exhaustion and burnout as they strive to give life to our work, life, and ministry. In many ways these ministries may have become isolated and good people feel out there all alone. Good ministries serve all, both those served in God's loving Name, and the soul of the minister. When balance is overlooked, the ministries are strained and become less effective.

We want to be a healthy, life-giving parish to all. With that in mind, Fr. Evan has proposed a way for us to get a handle on the work we do, through what he calls "ministry clusters". Each ministry will be gathered with like ministries so we can support and encourage one another. The clusters that have been identified are:
  • Spiritual Ministries - worship and other spiritual effortsFaith
  • Shaping Ministries - education, initiation, etc.
  • Connecting Ministries - in parish fellowship and caring
  • Servant Ministries - service to others in the community and world
  • Witnessing Ministries - activities that proclaim to the world
  • Stewardship Ministries - overseeing parish resources to minister.

A Vestry member will serve as liaison to each cluster, so the Vestry will be aware of the full life of the parish but be able to both support this life and look ahead. Starting in June, each Vestry liaison will be pulling the various ministries together as a cluster to meet with Fr. Evan and Lisa Inman to help them assess what is happening and what can happen. These learnings will come to the Vestry and eventually become part of the plan for the parish for 2017 and the future.

Along with their supportive links to the Vestry, the clusters will then continue to meet periodically to collaborate and, when it will make for a more effective ministry, coalesce their efforts. All of this is so the life and work of St. Mary Magdalene can become more vibrant and life-giving for the parish and the world around it.

Please pray for these efforts, that the Spirit of God may open our eyes and guide us as His instrument in this place...
