A Word from the District Superintendent

"Reading the Bible"

One of the most helpful and fulfilling personal spiritual practices I have enjoyed is reading through the entire Bible on a regular basis. I invite you to join me in a planned complete reading of the Bible. I have read the Bible 20 times over 25 consecutive years. As those called to follow Jesus and be witnesses to His love, I believe it is important to continue to read the Bible, to maintain familiarity with it, to grow in understanding, and to give God opportunity to teach us.

Now is the time to develop a plan which one can begin for the new year (or sooner, as I will explain). There are many ways to read through the Bible methodically. If you have trouble finding one to fit your schedule or taste, I offer three possible reading plans here.

Click here to find my personal plan. This plan covers the entire Bible over a two year period, reading the Old Testament, Psalms, and New Testament simultaneously. The plan is sectioned into four-line groupings. Four lines make up a week. Read one line each day. Choose which four days of each week you will read (you get three days each week off). Using this plan, the average reader will spend only 15 minutes each day (one hour a week) in reading time.

I always begin my plan at the first of December, so that at the start, I am one month "ahead." So, if emergencies arise or I somehow get detained from completing my readings, I don't get discouraged from getting "behind" because I built in a month's buffer at the start. Maybe it's a mind game, but I know myself and this keeps me going. This December, I will be starting with Genesis, Psalms, and Matthew again.

God will bless you as you read the Bible.

Another plan, developed by Michael Coley, can be found at http://www.Bible-Reading.com. Click on the subheading "Plan" under "Bible Reading." Then, click on "one page printable Bible Reading Plan." It's an Adobe file. This plan takes one through the entire Bible in one year, reading 7 days each week. The average reader can complete this plan spending only 17 minutes each day in reading time (almost two hours a week).

A third option is a plan I have used in the past, offered by Discipleship Journal magazine. Click here for this Adobe file. This plan is very flexible, as the included instructions indicate. Notice only 25 reading days each month-built-in catch-up days!

Please prayerfully consider renewing your own practice of reading the Bible in its entirety or taking up that practice for the first time. God will bless you as you spend time with His written Word.

Go in peace.  Go with God.  And be well.

Shalom,

  Charlie Only Signature

Volunteers Needed for Indiana Habitat Partnership

This week is week four in the "RAISE the ROOF in Southern Indiana" build in Henryville and other places in Southern Indiana. The Indiana Conference has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Indiana and is in need of volunteers now through Dec. 14. The goal is to have nearly 20 families in new homes by Christmas. Ten of those homes are in the Twin Oaks subdivision in Henryville. This will take thousands of hours of construction, finish work, painting and cleaning effort. Volunteers are encouraged to follow the procedures online at https://habitatindiana.volunteermatrix.com/ for site assignments on the dates you or your team may be available.  The following dates are still open:  Nov 5, 6,7, 19-21, 26-30, Dec. 3-7, 10-14. If you require additional information or need assistance in working through the registration process, you may call Habitat for Humanity of Indiana office in Indianapolis at 317-454-8101 or Beth McDaniel, Indiana UMC Volunteers in Mission Coordinator, at 317-705-1870 or send email to her at vim@inumc.org.

Praying for our Churches

A year long prayer emphasis has been announced by Bishop Michael Coyner, who asked each congregation to pray for five other congregations every Monday through Friday in 2012.  The object is to lift our sister United Methodist Churches in prayer at least once during the year.

Prayer Quote

"Nothing is ever wasted in the kingdom of God. Not one tear, not all our pain, not the unanswered questions or seemingly unanswered prayers. . . . Nothing will be wasted if we give our lives to God. And if we are willing to be patient until the grace of God is made manifest, whether it takes nine years or ninety, it will be worth the wait."-Rebecca Manley Pippert"
