UNCOM Host 5th Annual Walk for Wellness Event September 13th, 2013
United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM) and its member agencies present the 5th annual UNCOM Walk for Wellness on Friday September 13th, 2013 from 5:00-7:00p.m. This year's walk is hosted by UNCOM agency partner Silver Spring Neighborhood Center. The 1 mile walk around the perimeter of the Westlawn Housing Development is for youth, families, and staff from UNCOM member agencies including: Agape Community Center, Neighborhood House, and Silver Spring Neighborhood Center. Also invited to participate are Zilber Neighborhood Initiative (ZNI) partner neighborhoods. The goal of the UNCOM Walk for Wellness is to focus on the importance of healthy eating and active living. The Milwaukee based band the Figureheads will perform and Mind, Body & Soul (MBS) Dancers will warm up the group with urban line dancing. Every registered participant in this free event will receive an event t-shirt, a healthy bagged dinner, and bus transportation from his/her respective agency. Milwaukee Police Department District #2 5th Annual Open House Celebration September 21st, 2013
Milwaukee Police Department District # 2 is sponsoring its 5th Annual MPD Open House celebration on Saturday September 21st, 2013 at 245 W. Lincoln Ave. 11:00-2:00p.m.
The MPD District 2 Open House is designed to build community by opening our doors to our neighbors, allowing them to get a bird's eye view of our police station and inviting them to partner with us to keep our community safe and crime free. MPD District 2 Open House hopes to generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs to strengthen neighborhood spirit and community partnerships through our MPD District 2 Open House Resource Area. VPI Partner Vistelar Group to Host Beyond Conflict Conference November 7-10 2013
For the first time ever, the Vistelar Group is opening its annual conference to anyone who faces conflict in the workplace or their personal lives. Beyond Conflict 2013 will beheld Nov. 7-10 at the Brookfield Sheraton in Brookfield, Wis.
Up until 2012, Vistelar's professional-level conferences were restricted to its team of Verbal Defense & Influence trainers and instructors. The conference will start with a full day of learning and interaction: Participants may select from one of three options - individuals who work with youth; those who would like to attend the basic Verbal Defense & Influence course; and those who have previously been certified instructors in Verbal Defense & Influence. The next two days (Friday and Saturday) participants can select eight breakout sessions tailored to their specific interests and needs. There will also be top-notch keynote speakers, panel discussions and lots of opportunities for networking with conflict experts and conference attendees. The City of Milwaukee is currently recruiting for the positions of Fire Cadet and Police Aide. Both positions are paid apprentice programs for youth 17-19 years of age who are interested in a career in protective service.
It is the departments goal to identify, recruit and retain highly qualified and diverse candidates for the positions of Police Aide and Fire Cadet. In an effort to meet the goals of the department, we are holding various recruitment events over the next couple of months.
Our first event will be Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Harley Davidson Museum. As more event dates are finalized they will be listed on the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission website:

COA's Goldin Center in partnership with Children's Hospital of Wisconsin hosted a Back to School block party August 26th, 2013. Over 350 people joined in celebrating the close of another wonderful summer of COA programming and got a sneak peak at their new Clinic and Gill Family Resource Center! Families participated in games, entertainment, along with school supplies and community resources. Running Rebels Community Organization (RRCO) showcased their culinary expertise during the Harley Davidson Iron Elite 110th Anniversary Celebration weekend on August 30th, 2013. RRCO Catering provided hungry Harley enthusiasts from around the world a taste of their culinary skill and Milwaukee hospitality at the Iron Elite event held at Uihlein Park. RRCO youth Devin Parker enjoyed the Iron Elite and the opportunity to meet Niguel Villeges all the way from Harley's corporate office in London, England.

Children's Safety Network Webinar: The UNITY RoadMap: A Framework for Preventing Youth Violence September 16th, 2013
Violence is preventable, and more U.S. cities are exploring public health approaches to create safe, thriving communities. Prevention Institute developed the UNITY RoadMap for cities to more effectively and sustainably prevent violence before it occurs. Grounded in partnerships and prevention strategies, the UNITY RoadMap describes the essential elements for implementing a comprehensive strategy. Presenters will introduce the UNITY RoadMap and describe how its elements have been integrated into local efforts, such as the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative.
Learning Objectives:
During this webinar, participants will learn about:
- The importance of coordination and collaboration for preventing youth violence
- The essential elements of an effective and sustainable violence prevention initiative

Robert Wood Johnson Webinar: States Plan for Consumer Assistance in Exchanges
On Wednesday, September 11, 1:30-3:00 p.m. ET, join RWJF grantee State Refor(u)m for a 90-minute webinar on how states are providing assistance to individuals enrolling for coverage through health insurance exchanges.
Speakers from Arkansas, Colorado and Minnesota will discuss the various ways states are coordinating efforts (navigators, in-person assistance, application counselors, call centers, agents, brokers), as well as some of the issues they anticipate facing when open enrollment begins next month.
