| | Stone Wall at the Eastern Edge of the NHLT's New Wernick Property |
What?
Dr. S. Steven Wernick bequeathed property on both sides of Steele Road to the New Hartford Land Trust. The land became ours just a few weeks ago and we are thrilled that he chose to preserve it with NHLT. Now, we invite you to a tour at peak laurel blooming time. Through Dr. Wernick's generosity and planning, this beautiful and varied 68.5-acre site will remain open space in perpetuity.
Where?
Meet on Steele Road near the driveway to #364. We will walk a path through the meadow on the west side of the road and take in views of the open water wetlands. Then, we will hike up an old wood road to small meadows within the woodland on the east side of Steele Road. The last part of the walk will be climbing up the hill to the east past dense laurel stands that should still be blooming on Saturday, along a beautiful old stone wall at the top and then loop back down.
Some parking is available on the Road. We will direct you to other spots if needed.
Who? There is some fairly long uphill on the second part of this tour. The first part is not too steep with gentle slopes down to the wetland views and up to the meadows on the east side.
Please wear comfortable hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes and bring a walking stick if you have one. Insect repellent is recommended. |
