Hike on Town Hill Explore NHLT's Gilkyson Property
Saturday, June 21st
9:00 a.m.
Enjoy what promises to be a beautiful
early summer morning by walking the first property acquired by the NHLT back in the early 1970's. This land was donated by Bernice Kenyon Gilkyson, a poetess who loved nature.
Here is one of her poems:
'Sigrid's Song'
(Originally published in the American Mercury,
June 1949)
Fire-weed, saxifrage, bee-balm and feverfew
Thistles at their flying, and tansy and yarrow,
Gather them together to delight you and comfort you
With beauty, and duty, and hope for tomorrow.
Nothing lasts as flowers last, with simple form and savour:
Nothing shines as flowers shine, although their time be brief.
Soapwort and sorrel, they cannot last forever,
But they can bring you happiness and never any grief.
White splurge and queen's lace and tumble-weed and clover,
Snow-on-the-mountain and laurel in the dale,
Tell them and count them, oh many times over,
For day falls and life fails if loveliness should fail.
Directions/Where to Meet:
From Town Hill Road (Route 219), turn onto Pussy Lane. You will see a green barn just a few feet down the road on the right. Park in the barn driveway.
