Last spring, volunteers loaded up piles of old tires and took them to RRDD#1 for disposal. Please e-mail us as soon as possible if you would like to volunteer for next Saturday's work day or future work parties at the Alfred Sabolcik property or other NHLT parcels.

Thank you to the 20 NWR7 students who have already signed up to help!
We are happy to have reached our maximum capacity for student volunteers that we will supervise directly on April 26th. If you are a student looking for volunteer hours and you are not already confirmed for 4/26, please contact us about coming out on Saturday, June 7th, for our next work day at this property.

Beavers have been busy at the site as evidenced by their recent work on these young trees in different areas of the stream than last year.

Was there really fresh snow on the ground
this morning?

Happy Spring!

Join NHLT's Spring Bird Walk on Saturday, May 3
Led by an Expert From Litchfield Hills Audubon Society!
Plus . . .  Summer Bird Count - June 28-29 and View a Chimney Swift Roosting with NHLT
Photo by Paul Fusco, CT DEEP

Join Fran Zygmont, President of the Litchfield Hills Audubon
Society and past President of the Audubon Council of
Connecticut, for a beginning birder and birding by ear walk
in New Hartford. If you have always wanted to know more
about birds, this is the walk for you. Fran will go over some
basics about bird watching and share his knowledge for what
to look and listen for. There will be ample opportunity to ask
questions and to see a variety of birds.

Fran has roots in New Hartford - growing up on Cotton Hill - and lives close by in Barkhamsted. He has birded for more than 30 years and is an expert in bird calls, often fooling people who attend walks!

The New Hartford location will be sent out next week via this e-news and to all those who pre-register. We will meet at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3rd. Rain will cancel. Plan for the walk to last 2-3 hours. If possible, please let us know you are coming so we can organize according to our numbers. For more information, please e-mail us. We can put you in touch with Fran if you have questions for him.

Also, mark your calendars for the Summer Bird Count on the weekend of June 28 and 29. If you are interested in volunteering to help Fran with the local Count, please let us know by June 20th.

We are also planning a special program to learn about and view the sunset roosting of Chimney Swifts at the New Hartford Elementary School. Bird specialist Shannon Kearney-McGee of CT DEEP is working on a project with these birds and will share some of her knowledge with us. Details will be sent out in the next few weeks.
