Vol. 4, Issue 21

The Mighty Soul Drivers will play at the Fall Frolic on October 19th at Ski Sundown. Bring the family! Tickets include live music, dinner, wine and beer and pumpkin decorating for the kids. Proceeds will go to NHLT's land conservation and stewardship activities.

The Mighty Soul Drivers will bring the classic Soul sounds of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and points South to New Hartford for the Fall Frolic! They take their inspiration from the giants of Southern Soul - O.V. Wright, Percy Sledge, Otis Redding
and more and combine that with contemporary tunes written in the classic style. The Mighty Soul Drivers turn every venue they play into a
Soul dance party!

Lo rez Phillips trees turning darker KO

  When gentians roll their fingers tight

 To save them for the morning,

 And chestnuts fall from satin burrs

 Without a sound of warning;

  When on the ground red apples lie

 In piles like jewels shining,

 And redder still on old stone walls

 Are leaves of woodbine twining;

  When all the lovely wayside things

 Their white-winged seeds are sowing,

 And in the fields still green and fair,

 Late aftermaths are growing;

  When springs run low, and on the brooks,

 In idle golden freighting,

 Bright leaves sink noiseless in the hush

 Of woods, for winter waiting;

  When comrades seek sweet country haunts,

 By twos and twos together,

 And count like misers, hour by hour,

 October's bright blue weather.

About The Mighty Soul Drivers. . . . .

After singing and playing harp as the front man for The Blues Blasters throughout the 90's, New Hartford's own River City Slim led The Zydeco Hogs as they brought the sound of Louisiana Zydeco and Blues to the Northeast. Slim has been spreading the Soul, Blues and R&B gospel over the air for years as a DJ on WWUH and WAPJ. The idea for The Mighty Soul Drivers had been kicking around in the back of his mind for a while when a chance meeting with Bob Orsi at a CT Blues Society jam session in early 2012 finally put the wheels in motion.

"AMEN to the vocals!! Good golly what a groove! Great Bass! Makes me want to dance! Great showmanship, talented instrumentalists, good volume (not too loud). Gorgeous covers. The crowd loved this versatile set. Tight instrumentals. GREAT STAGE PRESENCE! Great to see the dance floor full. Great set!"

   Judges' Comments

"A new band, made up of experienced professionals, who came to the competition with the bar set high -- and lived up to the advance expectations. Bob Orsi, known for his harp work with the D. Smith Band, put his harmonica aside and treated us to an intense performance of Soul Blues."

Invasive Plant Walk and Learn This Saturday, 10/12, in Pine Meadow
Purple Loosestrife by river lo rez
Above: Purple Loosestrife looks pretty but is classified as invasive in CT. Invasive plants are non-native and spread so aggressively that they crowd out all other plants. Find out why we need to be concerned about them on Saturday on a walk with Biologist and invasive plant specialist, Betsy Corrigan.
Join Biologist Betsy Corrigan on the River's Edge

NHLT will host an invasive plant workshop this Saturday, October 12 at 9:00 a.m. in the back yard at 62 Wickett Street in Pine Meadow. All are invited to this free 'walk and learn' program on the banks of the Farmington River to learn to recognize invasives in the field. Participants will find out why they cause concern and what we can do about them. Biologist and invasive plant specialist, Betsy Corrigan, will lead the program and will also identify samples that people bring from home. If you have heard of invasive plants and don't know much about them or if you are knowledgeable but want an opportunity to learn to identify these plants in fall or if you want to ask in-depth questions of an expert, this workshop is for you! People with varying degrees of knowledge and experience with invasive plants can all take something from this program.

Please register in advance, if possible, so we can provide fact sheets, resource lists and other materials to all who join the walk. E-mail us at newhartfordlandtrust@yahoo.com or call 860-626-0301. We will send out an e-news if the session is postponed due to heavy rain or lightning. Walkers should wear rubber boots as the group will travel through some wet spots and spend time at the river's edge.

Betsy Corrigan is a consulting biologist working in the field on invasive plant inventories, mapping, prevention, eradication and control. She has been assisting the Farmington River Coordinating Committee on an initiative to map and address invasive plants including shrubs along the river.
