Special Second Saturday Hike!
Fascinating Fungi:
A Mushroom Walk
Led by
Marlene Snecinski
(AKA 'Mushroom Marlene')
Naturalist and Mushroom Expert
Saturday, September 14th
9:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Have you always wanted to know more about the mushrooms and other fungi growing in our woodlands? Join NHLT and naturalist Marlene Snecinski, aka Mushroom Marlene, for a guided walk, foraging for wild mushrooms and other fall botanicals on Saturday, September 14th. Marlene will tell us fascinating fungi facts including which ones are sought after as delicacies and which ones to avoid. Snecinski is a member of the Connecticut Valley Mycological Society and leads a variety of mushroom walks and programs throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts for land trusts, nature centers, and schools. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing for an easy to moderate hike with some wet spots.
We are limiting the number of participants to 30 for this program. Please e-mail NHLT or call 860-489-4118 as soon as possible if you plan to join to reserve a spot. The Mushroom Hike will go forward if there is a light drizzle but will be postponed if raining. NHLT will send out an e-news if the walk is postponed.
Hikers should meet at the trailhead for the Town of New Hartford's Jones Mountain Open Space Preserve (about 1+ miles up Steele Road from Route 219 in center of town). Follow signs. Wear clothing appropriate for an easy to moderate hike and bring bug spray if needed. We will not actually walk very far as we will be studying mushrooms along the way. Jones Mountain is a great place for a longer hike before or after the Mushroom Walk!
The Mighty Soul Drivers to Play at NHLT's Second Annual Fall Frolic on October 19
River City Slim (of the Zydeco Hogs in photo at left playing at the NHLT's Swamp Stomp in 2006) will return to play for the NHLT's Second Annual Fall Frolic on October 19th. This time, he will be with The Mighty Soul Drivers. They "will bring the classic soul sounds of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and points south" to New Hartford. Their music will turn the NHLT's Fall Frolic into a fabulous dance party after they play quieter tunes during the earlier part of the evening and delicious harvest dinner.
Join us at Ski Sundown on Saturday, October 19th from 6-10 p.m.! Invitations are coming soon. This event is family friendly. Come out to support your Land Trust and enjoy an evening of fabulous food (including vegetarian dishes), friendly people and great music!
