Dear Friends,
The New Hartford Land Trust Board and the Town of New Hartford Open Space Commissioners were very sad to learn that Bob LaGoy passed away on Sunday.
Bob was a true community leader. He loved the outdoors and was a valued and wise colleague on the Town of New Hartford's Open Space Preservation Commission (OSPC). Bob was also a loyal supporter of the New Hartford Land Trust (NHLT). He was instrumental in helping Alfred Sabolcik preserve his land with NHLT several years ago and provided generous support for our efforts to get the property ready for public access.
A former first selectman of New Hartford, he knew a great deal about the history of the town and told wonderful stories and anecdotes in making a point or in teaching others about what he knew. To us, it seemed that in addition to being very smart and curious, he had the common sense perspective that often accompanies an agrarian sensibility.
On the OSPC, Bob had a gentle approach tempered with humor but the strength of his passion for land preservation and clarity of his vision of our community's future shone through when an important project needed a push or when he felt an issue was being misrepresented. He stepped up and spoke up at critical times and in doing so was an exemplar to others.
Our deepest sympathies go to Bob's wife, Nancy, their family, and all of his loved ones.
A memorial service is set for tomorrow, Thursday, July 25th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in New Hartford.
Our community has lost an important voice and spirit in Bob's passing. We remember him fondly and will miss him.
