Greetings!

Welcome to a new edition of Desiderata, a special-alert service from Worldwide Books that aims to bring to your attention special new and forthcoming publications that may not be suitable for automatic inclusion in our approval-plan program (due to subject matter, special format, limited availability or price), but that nonetheless are likely to be of interest to many libraries. We will also periodically highlight noteworthy new approval-plan selections that may not be widely available through other sources.

European Sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum

The Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford has announced the publication of a massive three-volume catalogue that will document its holdings of medieval and Renaissance sculpture, one of the finest such collections in the world. Similar in format to the 2009 catalogue of the Museum's European gold and silver pieces (Worldwide 72247), the lavishly illustrated catalogue will showcase more than 500 works dating from the start of the 13th century to the mid-1500s.

Volume 1 will be dedicated to bronzes and other metal sculptures, while Volume 2 will document works in stone, clay, ivory, bone and wood. Volume 3 will focus on the Ashmolean's collection of plaquettes, small relief sculptures generally cast in bronze. Totaling some 1,200 pages, the set will weigh approximately 20 lbs.

The release date in the U.K. for this magnificent publication is September 1, 2014. Due to the set's limited print run, the publisher had not made arrangements for the title to be distributed in North America through regular commercial channels. However, in close cooperation with the Ashmolean Museum, Worldwide Books is now arranging a pre-publication order to import copies into the U.S., and libraries interested in acquiring this title through Worldwide are asked to please submit their orders to us by August 22nd to take advantage of the cost savings we will realize by arranging a bulk shipment immediately upon release. Worldwide's price for the three-volume set will be $795.

From the publisher's description:

"The collection was built up over four centuries from the dawn of English art collecting through to the Victorian period, which saw the arrival of one of the world's great collections of Renaissance bronzes and other sculpture assembled by the scholar-connoisseur C.D.E. Fortnum, as well as further gifts and occasional purchases to the present day."

"This comprehensive three-volume set is the definitive compendium of the collection of medieval and Renaissance sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum and is indispensable both for the specialist and the general reader."
