For those who grew up during or before the 1960's, tonsillectomy was a rite of passage in childhood. Millions of children underwent tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy surgery, and in the first half of the 1900's, it was the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the United States.  With improved antibiotic availability, and lowered risk of post-streptococcal complications, the incidence of tonsillectomy dropped by over 50% in the 1970's and '80's.  However, with the decline in tonsillectomy surgery for throat infections came an increased awareness of adenotonsillar enlargement contributing to sleep disorders in children.  Over the past 35 years, ... The 2016 Advances in Pediatrics conference took place for the second year in a row in the beautiful Starview Room on the 21st floor of the Sheraton Universal Hotel. We had a total of 106 in attendance, six brilliant speakers, 21 exhibitors, and a raffle. Both CME and MOC were offered. Thank you to those who attended.

We would also like to thank our on-site AAP-CA2 volunteers, Dana Anderson, Cynthia Schwieters, and George Schwieters, our behind the scenes AAP-CA2 CME/MOC staff, Marta Betancourt and Marge Gates, and all our exhibitors for participating.

________________________________________________________

We started the day with "Mindfulness in the Morning"
Dr. Alisa Dennis led a complimentary mindfulness session with elements of tai chi, in the form of warm-up and gentle stretching exercises. She led attendees through a body scan and guided meditation. This was followed by a brief Q & A session with sharing of reflections about mindfulness practices. The focus was on tension reduction and rejuvenating the mind & body. Despite the early hour, there was excellent attendance. Attendees left feeling invigorated and energized.

The main conference began with lectures by Dr. Carlo Reyes, who is an emergency medicine physician, pediatrician, and lawyer. Some of the main take-home messages from his talks were to be aware of the pitfalls of how the electronic medical record can get you in trouble; Document what you do and why; Include patients and their parents in shared decision making. He also discussed the appropriate use of black-box medications and how to weigh the risks and benefits.

Larry Pickering, MD, FAAP, FIDSA, past senior advisor to the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and past Executive Secretary of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), encouraged us to sign up for the free Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Review (MMWR) resource from the CDC.  www.cdc.gov.mmwr  His count down of the top 5 nationally notifiable diseases was entertaining.

AAP-CA2 treasurer, Alice Kuo, MD, Phd. Med, FAAP, Professor of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, discussed autism and the Social Determinants of Health.
She recommended www.autismtransition.net and reminded us that our patients are children with autism, not austistic children.

Dr. William Hohl, Chief of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, stated that overuse injuries are associated with increased hours of sports participation, such that young athletes should not engage in more hours of exercise than two times their age in years, per week. An examination pearl is that children with potential
slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) externally rotate their affected hip as they flex. He also stated that children do not have shoulder dislocations unless there is an underlying collagen-vascular process, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Dr. Andrew Freedman, Director of Pediatric Urology, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, stated that pre-puberty, 60% of testicular pain is from torsion of the appendix testis. Patients with testicular torsion commonly present with nausea and vomiting.

Dr. Moise Danielpour, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, discussed the statistical difference in outcome when having a pediatric neurosurgeon treating a child with a brain tumor as opposed to a general neurosurgeon, as well as highlighting advancements in that field.

(Left) Conference attendees filled the Starview Room on April 16. Dr. Milton Kolchins, Dr. Barry Brooks, and Dr. Steve Feig are focused on the introduction of the next speaker.  (Top right) AAP-CA2 President, Paula Whiteman, MD, FACEP, FAAP, introduces the fourth speaker of the day, (Bottom right) William M. (Bottom left) Dr. Huffer, the winner of the Pediatric Dermatology book, receiving her prize. Right (top) Dafna Ahdoot, MD / Gwen Huffer, MD FAAP, and (bottom) Vincent Haynes, MD, FAAP, listen attentively.

Meeting with SB 277 co-author Senator Ben Allen

Meeting with Senator Ben Allen

On Thursday, April 28th, AAP-CA2 President Paula Whiteman, MD, FAAP, FACEP and AAP-CA2 Executive Director, Toms Torices, MD joined the Californians Allied for Patient Protection (CAPP) reception held at Windsor Gardens Convalescent Hospital for Senator Ben Allen. Senator Allen represents the 26th District, which includes the Westside, Hollywood and the South Bay communities of Los Angeles County. He was a co-author with Senator Richard Pan on SB 277.

Senator Allen's personal interest in vaccine preventable diseases came from his grandfather, a pediatrician. His grandfather contracted polio as a child just prior to the introduction of the polio vaccine.

Senator Allen continues to be a strong supporter of the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act, (MICRA). In 2014, MICRA came to the forefront as part of the now defeated ballot measure, CA Proposition 46.

Representatives from various other organizations were in attendance, such as the Los Angeles County Medical Association, the California Academy of Family Physicians, the Hospital Association of Southern California, and the Los Angeles County Osteopathic Medical Association.
