2015 - October Edition

Paula J. Whiteman, MD, FACEP, FAAP
President, AAP-CA2
Representative, AAP-District IX CFMC
Welcome to the October edition of our monthly e-Newsletter.

Awards and recognition were part of the focus of our most recent board of director's meeting, which took place on September 16th. I would like to thank Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center for hosting our event. During our meeting, several members of our board of directors received special achievement awards from the National AAP. We also honored those AAP-CA2 members on the completion of their CATCH grants. Additionally, the nursing pioneers who have contributed to the success of the "Fit to Play and Learn" program were honored for their commitment and hard work. Please see the photos below.
Our feature article this month is by Dr. Andrew Freedman on the "Evaluation and Management of the Acute Scrotum." He is the Director of Pediatric Urology, Wang Endowed Chair in Pediatric Surgery, as well as Vice Chair of Pediatric Surgical Services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Freedman will be one of our speakers at our upcoming CME Symposium on April 16, 2016. Please mark your calendar accordingly.

Dr. Christopher Harris, recently appointed to the Committee on Pediatric Workforce, shares with us a resourceful webinar for all those considering leaving practice, or returning after a period of inactivity.
The Chapter Quality Network Phase 4 Asthma project (CQN4 Asthma) is in its last two months of the projected duration period. You may read about its progress below, as well as an update in regards to our partnerships with community organizations.
We have a Town hall meeting coming up at the end of this month hosted by Dr. Ken Saul. There is a half-day conference, STD Updates for Clinicians, in Bakersfield, as well as several other events in November. Our "Save The Date" section now features a link to view the online Events calendar, with the added benefit of a link to download all events to your own calendar ("Export Month's Events" on bottom right of the calendar), and individual links while looking at a specific event.
As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Paula Whiteman, MD, FACEP, FAAP

Evaluation and Management of the Pediatric Acute Scrotum for the Pediatrician

Andrew L Freedman, MD, FAAP

Introduction
The late night call usually comes from the parent. "Doctor, Johnny says his left testicle hurts." You quickly run through the usual scenarios; could this be torsion, an infection or just torsion of the appendix testis? What about trauma or referred pain? Or is there a more obscure cause? Can I rely on the parent's history and description? What if it is torsion and I miss it? Do they have to go the hospital or can I see them tomorrow? What if I guess wrong?   Read full article...      Bio.

"Physician Reentry 101"
Christopher Harris, MD, FAAP
Member, Committee on Pediatric Workforce

Physician reentry into clinical practice can be defined as
returning to professional activity/clinical practice
for which one has been trained, certified or licensed
after an extended period.

The Physician Reentry into the Workforce Project has developed a new resource to help physicians better understand what planning is needed before one leaves clinical practice, and what one needs to do in order to facilitate a return.

CQN4 Asthma QI Project - Update

Eleven practices continue participating in the AAP-CA2 Chapter Quality Network Asthma Phase 4 Project.

The project is currently in its third phase (action period 3) with a focus on patient/family self management support with an emphasis on motivational interviewing, spirometry, and strategies for project sustainability to continue providing optimal asthma care after the project ends in December.

The image below depicts progress made in providing Optimal Asthma Care by a practice (blue line) from February to present. The orange line represents the National average, while the red line is the average of all eleven CA2 practices.
The entire collaborative has an accumulated data base of 2,845 patients, with data being analyzed for 741 encounters to date.

Monthly totals are averaged and graphed. All data is entered by clinic staff directly into the National Asthma Registry, a service provided by the National AAP at no cost to CQN4 Asthma collaborative members. Accumulative data allows for improved population management.

Congratulations to the following practices for participating in this project:

Cesar Chavarria, MD, Inc.
Loma Linda University Health Care
Los Angeles Christian Health Center
Mandalay Bay Medical Group
Mission Pediatrics

Submitting Resolutions - Process Update

Paula J. Whiteman, MD, FACEP, FAAP

President, AAP-CA2
Representative, AAP-District IX CFMC

If you are passionate about a particular idea or topic that you feel should be a priority for the National AAP, then please consider submitting a resolution. Deadline is October 19th.

Please see the "Guidelines for Submitting Resolutions" and "Writing and Submitting a Resolution", (a step by step approach document that includes a sample resolution template).

I have included two sample resolutions to assist you. One resolution was my #1 MJ resolution, which was a late resolution and thus has wording reflecting that. The other resolution on tap water went straight to the consent calendar at the Annual Leadership Forum (ALF), which means it was felt to be a well written, concisely worded with clear intent as well as being a topic without controversy presented with adequate supporting background material.

Please feel free to contact the chapter, if you need assistance with the process.

Submitted resolutions must have a sponsor for consideration at ALF.

While the resolution submission deadline for the National AAP is midnight CST on Dec. 1, 2015, in order to have time to refine any resolutions and meet internal deadlines for AAP-CA2  sponsorship and possibly, district (AAP-CA) sponsorship, please submit them to the chapter by October 19, 2015.
