Let your Radiance Shine - No Matter What

In June, my wife and I celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary.  We held a big party at Riverdell, where we live, and invited over 100 people.   We wanted to celebrate the wonder of the journey of our married life together, with all its ups and downs.   We'd almost separated at one point and we'd both lost our wedding rings.  Viewed through one lens, it was touch and go if we'd make it.

And we have done so.   Not through heaps of counselling, important as that can be for some.  But through deepening our knowing of the spiritual principles upon which our lives are based.   Such principles aren't the sole property of religion - they are universal pointers to how Life works.  Here are some that have made a difference to us:

  • We are born for greatness.   Have a dream.  As Nelson Mandela said, "There is no passion to be found in playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living"
There IS a source of Love, Wisdom & Vitality to which we always have access.   That's because it's within us.  It IS who we are - the Spiritual Being within the earthsuit of body, mind and emotions that make up our humanness.   We can always call upon those qualities and let THEM infuse our day to day experience.
  • There's "stuff" that we brought to our relationship that no longer fits.  Stuff we each need to clear away - our karma baggage.  We have each found our own unique way of doing the work to let that stuff go.   I've preferred workshops.  My wife likes quiet contemplative reflection and one to one conversation along with using homeopathics and flower remedies.   All sorts of things work.
  • We had to face the fear of shining brightly.  The risk in living the greatness for which we were born is that we might be cut down - tall poppy syndrome.   We might go beyond what we can back up over time, like reaching a new level of fitness but being unable to sustain it, leading to disappointment.   It could seem like a flash in the pan and it's better not to start at all and avoid the pain.   Other people might expect too much of us, or WE might expect too much of ourselves, in the future, turning possibility into burden.  We've had to face all these and decide to shine anyway.
  • Sticking at things over time.  Goethe said "That the moment that one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too"  By committing to see things through rather than giving up when difficult patches arose, we've been able to discover riches we hadn't thought possible.

Many people feel frustration in their lives.  I believe this is the result of not being true to the calling from within to be all that they can be.   Then they have a human experience which tries to convince then that their lives are limited - they can't have their dream.   I know that's not true - the common experience is a reflection of not knowing how things actually work.  Cynthia Occelli puts it this way - "For a seed to achieve its greatest expression, it must come completely undone. The shell cracks, its insides come out and everything changes. To someone who doesn't understand growth, it would look like complete destruction."

Let's be completely undone by the greatness that's within us that wants to get out!  Letting the Love, Wisdom and Vitality radiate through us no matter what.  Now THAT'S a very different life to live!   Are you up for that?

Live Your Truth

This was attended by 11 participants and held on Thursday evenings over 4 weeks.  Using a creative format of short presentations, journaling, discussion, experiential exercises and meditation, it explored the keys to unlocking the unique Truth that lies within each of us.

At the conclusion of the series and in answer to the question "What is your greatest learning from the program?" participants shared:
Vicky presenting at Live Your Truth
  • That my world starts & ends with me. There are many people & ways to help ourselves deal with stress, day to day life & challenges.
  • That we are all spiritual beings and have our own individual purposes in our 'human life'.
  • That Yes my life is 'my Choices'.
  • To listen to my body and always listen to my inner voice and stop ignoring it.
  • To stop and breathe when I feel stressed and notice what's going on.
  • To understand that we all have similar 'unwanted' experiences and we all have the ability to overcome & change our experiences for the better.

Family Open Day & Winter Solstice Celebration

Riverdell was blessed with sunny winter weather for its combined Family Open Day and Winter Solstice Celebration.  A bonfire set the scene for the afternoon in the Dell, and enthralled both children and adults alike.  A walk in the great outdoors for the whole family, was followed by a BBQ and sweets, with a camp oven damper made by Colin Cloudsdale included in the menu.

As the afternoon faded into evening the Solstice Celebration began, firstly with a "dab" of facepainting for all participants in preparation to enter ritual space.  Maggie Cope shared information around the solstice energies and then the ceremony began with sage smudging to clear the energy and heart space. Participants were led on a sacred journey by Vicki Edwards symbolising not only the external winter cycle but the internal cycle and the value of darkness and stillness in bringing forth new creations.  Chanting provided a powerful conclusion to the ceremony.

Celebrating Greatness

In this edition we continue our series of 'Celebrating Greatness', sharing the greatness of "ordinary" people who are opening up to new possibilities and to being leaders in their own lives.

This month Donna Nairn shares her thoughts on how our recent 'Live Your Truth' series has impacted her life in a personal & practical way.

"I have been working four days a week and with having another farm in Coonalpyn and all the time that 3 children take up I've had a feeling for a long time, which has turned into a strong burning feeling, to cut back at work.  But the thoughts came in "you can't do that." "you need the money", "they have invested so much time and  money training you" blah blah blah.

During the last 3 months I've been very run down and had swollen glands.  I don't normally get this, and a couple of other things I call "signs" have also popped up. Yesterday morning while making lunches in silence I lit the candle we received at the Live Your Truth workshop and wrote "Live your Truth" around it. Wow, an idea and a strong message came over me that today is the day to tell the principal that it's all a bit much and I need to cut back a day. I felt so at peace, no fear, no ifs and buts, it felt so right. So I did, I told her and she gave me a hug and thanked me for my honesty.  I felt a huge weight lift.

This will now give my head and soul space to allow what is next for me to flow through. The answers are truly within us. I'm so grateful that I have been given the tools to listen. Thanks so much."

Celebrating Greatness - Postscript from Jenni Douglas

In last month's Awakenings I reflected upon approaching the 'ordinariness' or the daily repetitious tasks of life with a sense of gratitude. I gave myself some homework to reinvigorate an 'attitude of gratitude'.

My strategies were:

  • reignite my gratitude journal
  • 10 minutes minimum of meditation focusing on my breath each day
  • Do my best to look for the greatness in each moment

I thought I'd let you know how this has worked for me.

Gratitude Journal: I've persisted with most nights writing down 5 things that have occurred or I've observed that I'm grateful for. This has helped create a general undercurrent of appreciation within me, that has helped me manage the winter blues.

Meditation: I haven't been so consistent with the meditation (it's amazing how challenging it can be to set aside just a little silent time each day), although I did commence a 21 day 'Journey' meditation program conducted by Brandon Bays, which was offered free on the Internet. This has helped me explore some big issues in relation to my emotions & thinking behaviours, and although challenging has been very freeing & life enhancing.

Greatness in each moment: This is something I forgot to focus on, although I think the Gratitude journal and Journey' meditation program have helped me approach life with more appreciation.
