Making of an Artist Seal

Article by Casey Shannon

Deer Seal

My Personal Artist Mood Seal/Chop

Deer

Artist seal/chops are an integral part of an Asian painting.  They are used to enhance the composition. I have written several articles in my newsletters about the use of these stones. If you are interested and missed any articles be sure to check my newsletter archives.

Archives

The making of an artist seal/chop is a very interesting process.  I wanted a mood seal of a deer to use on some of my landscape paintings because the deer is my totem animal and a special symbol for me. I had the above mood seal of a deer custom made for me at:

 Asian Brush Painter
in China and carved by Master Carver Uncle Liu.

First step: Pick out your stone

Sichuan Green Stone
I chose a Sichuan Green Stone for my carving. This stone is a gorgeous marbled stone with green and brown tones. It is soft enough to carve and green is my favorite color!

Next Step: Design or pick out an image

Deer

I designed this simple face of a deer. The image is elegant and graceful like the deer is when seen in the wilds of nature. It is important the design you create or the image you choose be an appropriate image for your seal stone. The carver has many issues to consider for carving such as the type and size of the stone, grain of the stone, and tools needed for carving.

Last Step: Carving

I contacted Lulu Wang of Asian Brush Painter and sent her my image. She sent my stone and my image to Uncle Liu for carving. You can see the fabulous result above.

Below is a great video of Uncle Liu carving a stone.  It is a very interesting and precise process which requires much talent and skill. Enjoy!

New Studio Video
Produced by Casey Shannon Studio

I have been working on a new landscape series this past summer of Carmel and Carmel Valley views. This area is absolute magic. My paintings are my artist interpretation of the beauty that surrounds me every day. Some paintings have been made into Asian scrolls and some paintings have been framed.

Here is a short video of selected pieces of the new work being created at the studio. Turn on your sound for beautiful music. I hope you enjoy it. 3:32

Gabe's Gossip ~
Observations of a Service Dog

Article by Gabe

gabe
Hello Everyone!
It's me, Gabe, your favorite service dog.

It's Fall my favorite time of year! I love chasing the leaves that fall from the trees. I even try catching them in my mouth. I have a lot of fun when Casey and I are not teaching and working at the college. Well, isn't that what dogs do......we have fun!

I do have a more serious side as the super hero service dog that I am. I take very special care of my partner Casey.  A good service dog like myself has got to earn his kibble!

Here is a silly picture of Casey and me out and about in the neighborhood on our scooter!  Fall is in the air here.
We can smell it!

Gabe and me smelling
Like I always say, take time to enjoy and smell the air!

Well, that's all for this month.

Don't forget to visit my training school!
