Greetings!
Hello everyone. Summer has been art busy! This is a combined month newsletter. I apologize for missing July. I was so busy meeting deadlines for art competitions, exhibits, and other creative activities that I could not create our monthly communication. It is an honor for me to have this opportunity to communicate with you this month and to be able to share the latest news from the studio.
Now, it's that time for us to journey together into art. Shall we begin?

What's in a name?
Article by Casey Shannon
Stones My Personal Artist Seal/Chop
What is in a name? That's a good question. I recently had the pleasure of learning that my name, Casey, has a very deep meaning for me in Chinese. My name in Chinese translates to mean 'Victory Learning'. Considering my life path, this name could not be more appropriate or fitting for me. I was astounded at the fit. Some peoples' names translate into beautiful poetic names like 'delicate flower' or 'elegant way'. Not mine, but oh boy is it right on!

To discover your Chinese name: Your name is translated into Chinese sounds and these sounds have meaning. It is uncanny how closely your Chinese name fits you to a 'T'.
My personal name seal shown in the image above, was carved by the renowned stone carver in China, Mr. Stone Dragon, < his American name.
I asked a Chinese art friend of mine how to pronounce 'Victory Learning'. It is pronounced Kai (long I sound) + Xi (shi) in Mandarin. So Kaishi sounds like Casey in Mandarin. But it is pronounced Hoi Jaap in Cantonese. I believe it is pronounced Gai Shu in Japanese
Kai means victorious, victory
Shi means practice, learning Name Signature CardFor a very nominal fee, Ning Yeh of Oriental Art Supply can translate your name for you. He supplies you with a 'signature card' that says your name and shows you how to write it in Chinese characters. This is a unique item made to order. Chop SetMy artist friend Nan Rae of Nan Rae Studio offers you a carved seal of your personal name with translation. Click on "Your Own Name Chop'. This takes about two weeks.

Painting Tip
Article by Casey Shannon
Ever painted or stained with tea?
Using tea in your paintings as a back wash or actually painting with it can be great fun. It produces interesting effects and is quite easy to utilize.
I have written a short blog post of how to paint with tea, given examples, and described the tools I used. If you are interested in learning more go: Here

New Studio Video
Produced by Casey Shannon Studio
I have been working on a new landscape series this summer of Carmel and Carmel Valley views. This area is absolute magic. My paintings are my artist interpretation of the beauty that surrounds me every day. Some paintings have been made into Asian scrolls and some paintings have been framed.
Here is a short video of selected pieces of the new work being created at the studio. Turn on your sound for beautiful music. I hope you enjoy it. 3:32

Asian Scroll Care
Article by Casey Shannon

Rolled Asian ScrollYour Asian Scroll will require some easy special care to avoid damage. With a little attention, your beautiful scroll will last for years. Here are some Scroll Care tips!1. Hang scroll carefully. Roll scroll down on the wall. Never let it just drop down!
2. As with any fine art, do not hang in direct sunlight. Limit exposure to humidly.
3. Do not touch the painting surface with your hands as human hands contain harmful oils and will damage the artwork.
4. If the scroll gets dusty, do not dust with a cloth that will make it worse. Use compressed air in a can (like the air used for cleaning computers). The air comes out strong so remember to stay a good distance away when spraying.
5. Protect from children and pets
6. When not on display, store rolled up tight and tied away from sunlight and humidity.
7. When re-hung, scroll will hang flat again in 1 or 2 days.
8. Please do not handle the scroll by its left or right side.
This causes creasing and permanent damage to the artwork. Always handle buy the wooden knobs.

Gabe's Gossip ~ Observations of a Service DogArticle by Gabe
 Hello Everyone!
It's me, Gabe, your favorite service dog.
Summer is almost at an end for Casey and me. Rats! We go back to work this week teaching at the college. We will have a lot of students this semester and I will have to take special care of Casey. A good service dog like myself has got to earn his kibble!
Here is a picture of Casey and me working at our college, Cabrillo College. We are just outside of the library and our friend and colleague shot this pix of us with his iPhone. Casey added the pretty artwork.
Can you tell I'm excited to be back at work! (I've got my serious professional look on)
Well, that's all for this month.
