Stones
Article by Casey Shannon
Stones My Artist Seal/Chop Collection
The above stones are in my personal artist seal/chop collection. Well these are some of them anyway. Ya can't have too many stones in my opinion!
Last month I talked about the history of the stone. This month I will share a little about using the stone (seal/chop). Seals are wonderfully beautiful and fun to collect! Seals are either carved in relief so that the characters appear in Red on a White background, or intaglio so that the background appears in Red and the symbols are White. As you will see in my collection, it is important not only to have a variety of shapes but also seals carved in both relief and intaglio. Below are seals of the famous master painter Fu Baoshi.
Example of Intaglio Private Seal of Fu Baoshi
Example of Relief Mood Seal "Work with which Fu Baoshi is satisfied" It is a good idea to have both intaglio and relief seals in your collection to use on your paintings as it creates interest. Treat your personal seals with great respect because they are treasures and have been carved with great dignity and respect. Many of my seals have been carved in China by the respected stone carver, Mr. Stone Dragon. I usually place two mood seals along with my personal name seal on my paintings. I use great care selecting and placing just the right seals for each work. Making Your Impression Lightly press your seal into the cinnabar paste several times and, as you do, blow on the seal to help warm and soften the paste. Always test the seal first on a piece of painting paper. If the imprint looks good, tap the seal into the paste a few more times, and then place it on your painting in a firm manner. Do not wiggle the seal around or you will blur the image. Just exert firm pressure on it for a moment, and then lift straight up. To get a sharp image, place a magazine under your painting before stamping. As an undersurface, a magazine offers just the right amount of yield and support. A softer undersurface can wrinkle the paper, while a harder undersurface could result in a poor contact. Practice placing your seals so that they appear straight. Always completely wipe off your seal before putting it away. Casey Shannon - Official China Seal Carving Gyoku-seki Society Director for USA

Sumi Painting Tip
Article by Casey Shannon
Ever heard of a Dragon Brush? In my humble opinion, this is some brush. I love this brush. I have not had mine long and I am really enjoying using it. This is a large brush and not for beginners. It dances across the page with bold lines and brush strokes. It makes wonderful interesting branches, gorgeous large bamboo leaves, and is strong like a dragon! Great brush. Here are some examples of the brush stokes you can achieve using it. This brush behaves a bit like an Orchid Bamboo brush and holds it's shape. I do not know if it would be a good brush for calligraphy or not.
