Ink Painting Tip Rooster Feather Brush
Article by Casey Shannon
Have you ever heard of a 'Rooster Tail Feather' brush? This is a specialty brush ordered from China. I really enjoy painting with this unique brush. It is a wonderful brush for 'free-style' sumi-e and also for 'loosening up'. Painting with this kind of brush is lots of fun! Unlike regular brushes with round pointed hair, this brush is so different that it can produce very rich textured strokes. It is especially suitable for landscape paintings. Here is a video of master ink painter Henry Li of Blue Heron Arts Co. demonstrating the use of the Rooster Feather brush in a landscape painting. | Sumi-e Landscape with Feather Brush-Henry Li | Jumbo Size Rooster Feather Bamboo Brush Made of rooster feather, which is between soft and stiff, this specialty brush can produce very rich textured strokes. It comes with an extra long handle which is made of "Buddha's belly" bamboo. Perfect for Sumi-e landscape paintings, fantastic for expressive rendering of flowers, and perfect for abstract Zen-style calligraphic paintings.
You can order and purchase one of these brushes from Blue Heron Arts Co.

I have contemporary original Sumi-e scrolls, framed original art, art prints, 2013 Zen calendars, and cards for you to enjoy. Visit Casey's Gallery ShuenFor more Contemporary Asian Scrolls This art gallery contains images created using sumi (ink) and watercolor painted on Shuen Paper (Xuan Paper). What is Shuen Paper you might ask? It is Chinese rice paper. Rice paper is the brush painter's canvas. Mastering the way ink behaves on the different rice papers is one of the essential skills of the brush painter. There are basically two kinds of rice paper -- raw paper and sized paper. Shuen Paper (Xuan Paper) is raw paper and the most popular paper in China among brush painters and calligraphers. It is the most sensitive of the rice papers, cheerfully displaying dynamic strokes and complex shade variations with translucent fluidity and original spontaneity. Any brush painter will tell you it is difficult to work with rice paper and takes years of practice to master. I have been painting for over 40 years and I am just a humble beginner!
