One Week Until State Legislative Day Early Bird Registration Rates Expire
The Early Bird registration rate for ABC of Michigan's State Legislative Day will be expiring in exactly one week from today on Wednesday, April 10th.
This year's State Legislative Conference will feature Speaker of the House, Jase Bolger, and Director of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), Steve Arwood. Speaker Bolger has made it known that repealing Michigan's Prevailing Wage Act is a top priority for the House Republicans this legislative session. As LARA Director, Mr. Arwood oversees Prevailing Wage, MIOSHA, the Bureau of Construction Codes, Workers' Compensation, Unemployment Insurance, and implementation of Right to Work.
You will also have the chance to become a citizen lobbyist and travel to your local lawmaker's office to discuss the issues that are important to you and your businesses.
The speakers are confirmed and the meetings are booked! The only thing missing is you! Constituent input on issues rates higher with elected officials than that coming from paid lobbyists. It is crucial that we have members to meet with their legislators on April 24th.
Remember to register before Wednesday, April 10, 2013 to receive the Early Bird registration rate.

The ABC Fund Distributes Over $2.8 Million Back to Members
Congratulations to the participants of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Michigan Self-Insured Workers' Compensation Fund! Members of this highly successful program will be receiving the largest returns of profit in Fund's history. Again, this year the Fund was approved to distribute $2,880,000 of profit back to its members. This return brings the total profits returned to over $22.8 million since the Fund's inception in 1995.
Returns like these are no accident, the Board of Trustees work hard on behalf of the Fund to ensure the members have a long-term cost effective program. The ABC Fund's unique structure combined with its solid performance has helped insulate its members from the turbulence of the traditional insurance marketplace. "Ordinarily an insurance company keeps the underwriting profits and investment income," according to Tim Hanna, Fund Administrator. "But in the case of the ABC Fund, the members earn it which helps drive their long-term costs down."
The ABC Fund is able to return significant profits back to its members because of its proactive loss control efforts, aggressive claim management and selective underwriting guidelines. Fund members consist of business owners that care about their success in the program and are committed to keeping their potential claim costs to a minimum.
The ABC Self-Insured Workers' Compensation Fund is also very selective when accepting new members. The selection process helps ensure that only the best performing operators participate in the program. In order to be written into the ABC Fund, each new applicant is carefully reviewed and must have a proven track record of low losses, acceptable work exposures, an implemented safety program and be financially stable. The lower the Fund's claim costs, the greater the profits.
For members that have experienced claims or want to prevent potential claims from occurring, the Fund also has a dedicated safety and loss control staff that specializes in the clubs industry and are available to help members in a variety of ways. They assist ABC Fund members by providing safety consultations, management training, safety manuals and numerous other resources.
The goal of the ABC Fund's safety and loss control specialists is to provide educational tools and services that can help members prevent potential claims and assist in the ongoing profitability of the Fund and its members. In addition, members receive semi-annual reports that reflect how they are performing and the amount of profit they are estimated to receive.

Foxx and Walberg to Host Michigan Field Hearing on Higher Education and Job Growth
WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Tuesday, April 9th at 9:00 a.m., Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Training Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) will join Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) in Michigan's 7th Congressional District for a field hearing entitled, "Reviving our Economy: The Role of Higher Education in Job Growth and Development." The field hearing will take place at Monroe County Community College, Administration Building Room #173, located at 155 S. Raisinville Road in Monroe, Michigan.
In an increasingly competitive global economy, a quality higher education system is crucial to the strength and success of America's workforce. Higher education institutions play a valuable role in encouraging local economic growth by providing individuals with the skills and training needed to fill in-demand jobs. As the House Education and Workforce Committee works to improve higher education and support a more robust workforce, committee members are seeking input from community leaders to learn about local solutions to education and workforce needs.
The field hearing will feature two panel discussions. The first panel will examine the local economy and job opportunities, while the second panel will highlight how higher education institutions in the community are preparing graduates for the workforce. To learn more about this field hearing and view a list of witnesses, visit www.edworkforce.house.gov/hearings. Media interested in attending the field hearing must RSVP to Sarah Kuziomko at sarah.kuziomko@mail.house.gov. |
