Welcome to AAUP 2014

If you've just joined us, welcome! The AAUP 2014 Registrants Newsletter provides periodic updates, news, and tips to help you make the most of your time in New Orleans. You can expect notice of program changes, information about speakers, recommended readings, and much more. Read previous newsletters online.

AAUP staff are already in New Orleans setting up, so if you have any questions, please be aware that responses may be delayed.

New Orleans Notices

Note that the weather in New Orleans in June is hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms. Pack an umbrella and a sweater for any overzealous air conditioning in meeting rooms.

Among other attractions, you may be planning on checking out the New Orleans streetcars. Our LSU friends helpfully pointed out that a portion of the St. Charles line is undergoing maintenance, with buses connecting the line between St. Charles at Napoleon and St. Charles at Erato. Find system maps here.

And just a reminder of the sightseeing resources on the meeting website and in our June 6 newsletter.

Speak Spanish? Pin for REUN

Two representatives from the REUN (Red de Editoriales Nacionales, an Argentinian network of public university presses) will be in attendance at this year's meeting. If you speak Spanish and would be willing to help communicate or just chat, pick up a flag pin at the registration desk for your meeting badge to signify to our guests que hablas espaņol.

As part of the AAUP's ongoing outreach to international presses, Peter Berkery represented the AAUP at a meeting of REUN and other Latin American university presses in Argentina in early June.

Featured Session

Help us reimagine AAUP! The Tuesday plenary itself has been reimagined as an interactive session around AAUP's new strategic plan. The AAUP board created the top levels of this plan to guide the organization in advancing scholarly publishing for all of its members. Press directors got started on this project at the 2012 directors meeting when they identified the role they wanted AAUP to play. In 2013, the directors refined their thinking and provided priorities for the new executive director, Peter Berkery. You will see the directors' handiwork front and center in this strategic plan. The articulated goals relate directly to the top goals identified by our membership during the past two directors meetings. Now it's your turn to influence AAUP's direction, by participating in this session and contributing ideas for innovative tactic to fulfill the strategic goals that have been set.

REIMAGINING THE AAUP:
EVOLUTIONARY AND REVOLUTIONARY OPPORTUNITIES
Tuesday, June 24, 10:45 AM
Facilitators: Philip Cercone, Director, McGill-Queen's University Press; Barbara Kline Pope, Director, National Academies Press;
Meredith Babb, Director, University Press of Florida
