Welcome: Registrants Newsletter Issue #4

If you're just now joining us, the AAUP 2013 Registrants Newsletter provides periodic updates, news, and tips to help you make the most of your attendance at the Annual Meeting. You can expect notice of program changes, information about speakers, links to reports and white papers relevant to session topics, and much more.

Special Events & Sponsors of AAUP 2013

Today, we turn our attention to the numerous special events that, combined with our educational programming, help make the AAUP Annual Meetings both professionally and personally rewarding.

Thanks to Our Sponsors

The generous support of Annual Meeting Sponsors helps to make our meeting a success each year, offsetting some costs of the meeting and allowing us to keep registration rates low. We extend our thanks to all of the following:

Thomson-Shore, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the New York Review of Books, Harvard University Press, and Thomson Reuters Core Publishing Solutions are sponsoring the receptions that are such an important part of building AAUP's collegial network.

CrossRef is underwriting the Early Career Travel Grant for AAUP 2013. Women in Scholarly Publishing (WiSP) is supporting a career development grant. The Western Presses Fund provides travel grants to numerous staff from small western presses, and the Whiting Foundation provides funding for five grants to Annual Meeting newcomers and staff from underrepresented communities.

Marquis is donating the printed AAUP 2013 Program.

Harvard University Press is also providing bookmarks and one of its Boston titles to attendees at registration.

Generous meeting support is also being provided by Ecological Fibers and the John P. Pow Company.

A Very Special Centennial

harvard_centennial AAUP is honored to be a part of the celebrations surrounding the centennial of one of our founding members, Harvard University Press. The Press was established on January 13, 1913, with the purpose "to advance knowledge." For the past 100 years, the Press has done just that, publishing more than 10,000 new books, many of them classic works in their fields. To showcase the books that are the central achievement of the Press's history, HUP is regularly posting excerpts from 100 significant titles published since 1913 at the website www.hupcentennial.com.

AAUP 2013 attendees will have the chance to toast this incredible record of scholarly service, and celebrate the continuing success and innovation of Harvard University Press, on June 22, at 6:30 PM at a reception at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art.

Constituency Award

The 2013 AAUP Constituency Award will be presented at the luncheon on Friday, June 21. The Constituency Award is an opportunity for the association to honor staff at member presses who have demonstrated active leadership and service to both the association and the university press community. Browse past Constituency Award winners here.

2013 Book, Jacket, and Journal Show

book_jacket_show2013
The 2013 AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal Show premieres at the Boston meeting in the Skyline Room. If most of the meeting is about talking and listening, the design show is a chance to see and feel actual books--to browse some of the best work from AAUP member design and production departments. Preview the list of selected titles that will be on display here. Pick up a catalog of selected entries, designed by the Book, Jacket, and Journal Show Committee. Production of the catalog was generously donated by Thomson-Shore and the John P. Pow Company.

Inaugural and Valedictory Addresses

And the baton is passed between AAUP outgoing president Peter Dougherty (Princeton) and incoming president Philip Cercone (McGill-Queen's) at luncheon addresses on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22.

Outgoing AAUP Executive Director Peter Givler will address attendees at the Opening Banquet on June 20 and incoming AAUP Executive Director Peter Berkery will give a brief talk at the June 21 luncheon.

Recommended Reading

Open Access policies at major funding organizations and agencies have been much in the news recently, and are likely to be hot topics of conversation in the sessions and hallways of AAUP 2013. Here's a short list of relevant new articles, blog posts, and documents to read in advance.

... And don't miss two sessions that will directly touch on these issues: New Funding Models (Saturday June 22, 3:30 PM) and Open Access Textbooks and MOOCs (Friday June 21, 10:45 AM).

Travel and Weather

For getting around town, the AAUP 2013 website has a few helpful resources. The Boston Guide includes plenty of information about local transit; and there are a few handy downloadable maps linked here.

Check the weather before you pack. But don't forget--whatever the conditions outdoors, meeting rooms can sometimes be chilly. A light sweater or jacket has never gone amiss!
