All the Good News about Port Sanilac

Greetings!
The air is beginning to warm and the crocuses are blooming.  Soon the daffodils will be showing their sunny heads and boats will be heading into the water.  It's spring in Port Sanilac!  Plans are being laid for summer so watch this newsletter for information so that you can plan to spend your time relaxing and playing with us here in our beautiful town.  We look forward to seeing you.

Fantastic Fishing In Port Sanilac

Steelhead

There is already some fantastic fishing going on off the shores of Port Sanilac this spring.  The fishers are making some spectacular catches both off the docks and from their boats.  Above you can see a 24 inch, 5 pound steelhead that was caught off the gas dock.  That's an option that's open to anyone who's willing to spend some time out in the sunshine with a rod and reel.

Out in the boats they are catching king and coho salmon and lake, brown, and steelhead trout.  Occasionally the lucky fisher is also snagging a walleye.  As the water begins to warm the walleye should be entering the harbor, too, so that beginner fishermen can have a chance at them.

If you're just a beginner, Mike at Port Sanilac Bait and Sporting Goods, will be happy to outfit you with what you need and teach you the basics of fishing so that you can go out and fish well enough to put some good fillets on the table.

For you expert fishers, Mike has all the latest information on what's biting, where it's at, and what you need to bring in a maximum haul.

Whoever you are, fishing in Port Sanilac is sure to satisfy.

Boaters:  The docks at the boat launch have not been put into the water yet so launching boats over 20 feet is not recommended.  The docks are usually in the water by mid-April.  Watch the Port Sanilac Bait and Sporting Goods Facebook page for regular updates on the status of the docks.

Do you have a tuxedo or an evening gown?  Would you like an excuse to wear them?  Dress up for the Casino Royale Night at the Blue Water Sports Bar and Grill on Saturday, April 6, and you will receive $20 in bonus chips to play with.  The "casino" will feature poker, craps, blackjack, and more.  Prizes will be awarded in lieu of cash.  All proceeds for the night will go to support the 2013 Antique Boat and Vintage Show.  For those of us that may not be dressing to impress on the 6th, fear not, there is plenty of room in the "casino" for us to.  All are welcome!

The "casino" will open at 6 pm in the upper deck of the Blue Water Sports Bar, tickets are $40 per person and include two free drink tickets, appetizers, $100 in playing chips (redeemable for party favors), and one ticket toward a door prize.  The gambling floor will be open until 10 pm when door prizes will be awarded.

Starting at 4 pm on the main floor of the Blue Water there will be displays of model and remote control boats and a display of the Pinafore.  The Pinafore is a 54 foot, steel hulled brig that was built here in Port Sanilac by Mr. George Gruber and launched in May 1972.  Stop in to see the history of the the Pinafore and meet some of the people involved in her building and maiden voyage down the intercoastal waterway.

Farmers' Market News

Farmers' Market LogoThe Port Sanilac Farmers' Market is preparing for a new season and we are all excited about the changes that the new year will bring.

The biggest change this year is our new operating dates and times.  The market will open this year:

Fridays 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm May 10 to November 1
Saturdays 12 noon to 4:00 pm June 15 to September 14

We hope that these extended dates and times will accommodate more of our customers. Last year it seemed that people arrived earlier and earlier each week. Vendors are prohibited from selling before opening time, but we hate to turn customers away, hopefully this will alleviate some of those problems.

As in the past, the market will feature items that are grown or produced exclusively in Huron, Sanilac, or Tuscola counties.  This guarantees that our consumers are getting a truly local product.

Again this year the market will provide access to our customers who use the Bridge Card or Project Fresh coupons.  Please visit the information booth for information on how to use your benefits at the market.  We strive to provide everyone in our community the opportunity to eat fresh and healthy, locally produced foods.

If you are a vendor interested in participating in this year's market please feel free to attend our vendor meeting on Saturday, April 13, at 4:30 pm in the Bark Shanty Auditorium.  If you have question prior to the meeting or are unable to attend please contact Erin McDaid at 810-404-3746 for more information.
