Community Investment Teams Complete Funding Review for 2014/2015
|
United Way of Laramie County will invest $760,000 in our community in 2014 and 2015. Included in the announcement is the list of Program Partners that will receive funding for the 2014/2015 two year funding cycle. An additional $30,000 is set aside annually in the Community Impact Fund. This fund is used for emergencies and matching funds to assist agencies with training and board development projects.
Four programs were added to the funding cycle: Community Action of Laramie County Kinship Support, LCCP ASK Program, Prevent Child Abuse Wyoming and Wyoming Health Council Faith Community Nursing.
United Way uses volunteer Community Investment Teams to review applicants in the areas of program quality, governance, finance and administration. The three teams also make sure the programs meet goals in the areas of helping youth reach their full potential, strengthening families and helping neighbors in crisis, and improving community health. Circles Wyoming
by Andrea, Circle Leader
|
I graduated from Getting Ahead (Circles' twelve-week self-sufficiency workshop) in December 2011 and was matched with my two Allies in January 2012. My husband, three children and I live in Cheyenne. When I came to Circles, my family was in a really hard place and we aren't now, except financially, which we're still working on. Coming to Circles helped me remember that I have other purposes in life besides being a mom - that's still the most important - but that I have other things to offer, too. Remembering this was the first step in building a self-sufficient life for my family.
I got pregnant with my first child in junior high and never went back to school after the birth of my son. Right afterwards, I took a young parent's program and almost got my GED, but I couldn't pass the math test. That was ten years ago and I now have three children.
When I started Getting Ahead, I was very quiet. I hadn't been in a group of people like this in a long time. As I got comfortable, I participated more and more. My Getting Ahead graduation was important to me. Full Story

Wyoming Free Tax Service |
The goal of Wyoming Free Tax Service is to meet tax preparation needs for low to moderate income taxpayers. The organization is made up of volunteers who are certified by the IRS each year on tax law. During the 2013 tax season, 19 local volunteers provided free tax preparation to Laramie County residents who met the income guidelines. This valuable community service would not be available without support from the IRS, LCCC providing the location and onsite services, and United Way of Laramie County who not only host the site, but also provide volunteer coordination and marketing support.
In 2013, 710 returns were filed in Laramie County. This assistance provided low income filers with $265,620 in earned income tax credits (EITC), $71,939 in child tax credits, $32,992 in education tax credits and over $950,000 in total refunds
The local Wyoming Free Tax Service site will open again in January/February 2014.

Stamp Out Hunger |
On Saturday, May 11, 2013, the Cheyenne letter carriers collected 27,610 lbs of non-perishable food during the National Stamp Out Hunger food drive.
Stamp Out Hunger, in its 21st year, is conducted by the National Association of Letter carriers and is the nation's largest single-day food drive. The food stays in the local community. This year's recipients were COMEA House, Needs, Inc., Safehouse Services, The Salvation Army, Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne, Wyoming Coalition for the Homeless, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Every year United Ways across the country partner with the local letter carriers to assist in the drive. United Way of Laramie County provides marketing support and organizes the local agencies.
