UOC2012 Uniting Our Community Award

Every year United Way of Laramie County presents the "Uniting Our Community Award" to an organization that exemplifies the United Way spirit in Laramie County. These companies show us how to LIVE UNITED.  The 2012 award recipient is Cameco Resources.

Cameco Resources has been a United Way pacesetter company since opening the Cheyenne office in 2010, providing a corporate gift as well as having a strong employee campaign. In addition to their campaign participation, Cameco is a diamond level sponsor and, for the second year in a row, the organization has partnered with other local businesses to issue a 50/50 community matching challenge. Their employees also demonstrate a strong volunteer commitment in the community.

Paul Goranson, Cameco Resources President, accepted the award on behalf of the organization:

KGWN & car dealer reps congratulate Arial Casiano

Through the generosity of local car dealers, United Way of Laramie County was again able to offer a car voucher drawing as incentive to donors of certain levels. This year's 13 finalists were hosted at Cheyenne Regional Airport in one of the hangars and by CBS News Channel 5 for the live drawing on January 15. The lucky winner was Arial Casiano, Board of Public Utilities. Arial won $15,000 toward the new or used car of his choice at on of the participating dealers. Congratulations Arial! More information

cochairMeet Our 2013 Campaign Co-Chairs
pat and renee
We are very pleased to announce that Renee and Pat Ashworth have agreed to serve a two year term as campaign co-chairs. Pat and Renee own Express Employment Professionals in Cheyenne. They moved here from Montana in 2007 when they purchased the franchise. Lifelong residents of Billings, they moved to Missoula in 2001 due to a job transfer. Renee worked for an Express Employment office in Missoula where her passion for helping people succeed grew. Before entering the staffing world she managed a women's clothing store and a fabric store.

Pat worked in the printing business for over 20 years. After leaving the printing world he worked for a microfilming company establishing the eastern Montana market before transferring to Missoula to run their operation there.

Renee and Pat immediately became involved in the Cheyenne community where they have served on boards and committees for Kiwanis, Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, the local SHRM Chapter, United Way and Julie's Career Closet.

"Express is based on helping people succeed and this is a perfect alliance with United Way and its program partners. We feel it's important to give back to the community that has given so much to us. Cheyenne is a very caring community and a great place to live and we want to continue that tradition."

Bob and Sandra Continuing in their second year as campaign co-chairs are Dr. Sandra Surbrugg and Dr. Robert Prentice.

Bob, pediatrician at the Cheyenne Children's Clinic, and Sandra, dermatologist at the Cheyenne Skin Clinic, have lived in Cheyenne for more than 35 years.

Bob came to Cheyenne in 1973 after 3 years in the US Air Force in Okinawa, Japan as a pediatrician. He also spent three years at the American Academy of Pediatrics in Chicago.

Sandra was a lifelong resident of Lamar, CO until coming to Cheyenne in 1975. After attending medical school and completing a residency in dermatology in Denver she opened her dermatology practice in 1988.

Community service has always been a "must" with both spending time as presidents of the local hospital medical staffs and on boards in the community. Giving back to the community that has supported them is important.

"United Way multiplies the effect an individual can have, expanding the impact on life in Cheyenne. We think that everyone needs to do something to make Cheyenne a community that cares."

THANK YOU Bob, Sandra, Pat and Renee!

WYFHOPWyoming Family Home Ownership Program

by Gina Salazar, WYFHOP Board Member

The Wyoming Family Homeownership Program (WYFHOP) is a non-profit organization designed to provide a "hand-up" to lower income working families with children to successfully prepare families for first time homeownership in Laramie County. The program begins with a 12 week Financial Education course whose focus is teaching families the importance of living on a budget, income to debt ratios and credit and its impact when purchasing a home. Upon completion from the course, families are encouraged to meet with a credit counselor and save a minimum of $100-$150 each month for the next 24 months. Families also learn how to connect to the community with the help of role model mentors and allies. At the end of the 24 month period, thanks to WYFHOP Faith Communities practicing social justice, Business Partners who have a more committed workforce and United Way supporting the building of stronger families, WYFHOP families are able to exhibit a substantial amount of money for the down payment of a "right sized" home. To date WYFHOP has 13 homeowner families including 37 children and another 17 families with 42 children preparing for home ownership.
