 Hawaiian Surprise
Submitted by Amber Martin

Ingredients:

2 c. Bok Choy, washed

2 c. Coconut Water

1/2 Fresh Pineapple, cut off the brown skin (but include the pineapple's core, it's jam-packed with good enzymes)

2 Bananas

1/4 Lime, include the peel!

1 c. Frozen Mango

Preparation:

Add 2 c. of Coconut Water and 1 c. Water to your blender along with the Bok Choy & Lime. Blend well. Then add your Pineapple, Bananas, and Mango. Add more water if needed. For "graduate" level green smoothie makers add more Bok Choy and less fruit! Enjoy!

Happening to Things

Love this:

"It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things."

Canned Soup and Food Additives

Processed soups are full of a lot of ingredients that are not always listed on the label.

Bisphenol A (BPA) - A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests we are ingesting dangerous levels of the hormone-mimicking chemical when we eat soup even once a day. BPA is found in the epoxy resin liner of most metal food cans. Compared to those eating fresh soup, the group eating canned soup saw BPA levels jump more than 1,000 percent. The levels are shocking. BPA is a synthetic, estrogen-like substance linked to obesity, breast and prostate cancer, aggression, and behavioral problems.

Sodium - While listed on most canned soup labels, you will see levels in the 800-900 milligram (mg) range. That is already half a day's worth for most Americans and assumes you only eat an eight-ounce serving!

Flavor Enhancers like MSG - Animal studies have shown that MSG is toxic to the brain and researchers believe it causes migraines in people because it dilates blood vessels and impacts nerve cells in the brain.

Pesticides and GMOs - Warren Porter, PhD. University of Wisconsin, says constant low-level exposure to pesticides can cause obesity, heart problems, circulation problems, and diabetes. It is so common, in the environment, scientists have even detected it in rain. In addition, the process of genetic modification can cause spontaneous abortion and infertility in animals and has been linked to skyrocketing rates of food allergies in humans the past decade.

 A Note from Angie

Angie Law

This month we celebrate the love in our lives. For us, February was always a busy month for celebrating. We had 4 of our kids' birthdays to recognize and, of course, Valentine's Day. Being a short month--that's a lot of celebrating!

It's a quieter month now as our family is all grown and spread all over. But, we still express our love with cards and other meaningful things. We too are recipients of expressions of love. Be sure to see our Healthy Relationships segment in this issue for a great example of how blessed we are as we receive messages of love and appreciation! Wishing for you the knowledge that YOU are loved too!!

Did You Know?

Go Green!

Green juice is all the rage. Folks know they've got to get greens into their diet for many good health benefits. Making green juice is a great way to do it! Be sure to see the yummy recipe for today's issue as my friend Amber Martin is a green drink expert.

I'm also including here another green drink recipe I found. Since this is the month of love, I'm going to shower you with TWO options for filling you up with goodness!

In the recipe below, you'll see the sweet fruits of cantaloupe and pear in combination with the more bitter taste of turnip and its green headed leaves. This is an awesome combo! Turnips are a nutritious root vegetable which is often over-looked. They are part of the cruciferous family of cabbage, kale, and brussels sprouts. Be sure to include the turnip's green tops as they provide important vitamins of A, C, K and carotenoids too. Enjoy!

Organic (washed well) Ingredients:

1 large turnip (including the long bunch of its green head)

1 ripe pear

1/2 cucumber

2 handfuls of spinach

1/4 cantaloupe, rind removed

1 large carrot

Put all ingredients into your blender (straining is optional).

And Science Marches On...

Excitotoxicity and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

In 1957, a couple of researchers experimented to see if a common amino acid, called glutamate, could help repair a diseased retina. They fed rats monosodium glutamate (MSG) and were shocked. The retinal cells which allow vision were swept and blown away as if by a tornado. Their discovery reported in a an obscure ophthalmology journal was soon forgotten. In 1968, a neuroscientist, Dr. John Olney, rediscovered that MSG was responsible for destroying vital functions including retinal vision cells and specific areas of the brain in the hypothalamus. Olney discovered that the glutamate was causing brain neurons to become overexcited, virtually exciting themselves to death. He named this phenomenon excitotoxicity.

Sensitivity

While glutamate is the most abundant neurotransmitter in the brain, it doesn't hurt normal brain function because glutamate is kept within brain cells and only a very small amount is allowed to escape during everyday brain function. These leaks are quickly cleaned up and removed. Humans are actually five times more sensitive to these excitotoxin additives in foods than the next most sensitive animal - the rat. Humans are 20 times more sensitive than monkeys. This means that one-twentieth the dose of MSG used to cause brain injury in a monkey will do the same in humans. Humans regularly eat doses of excitotoxins that damage animal brains. The fetus, infant, and small child are four times more sensitive to MSG toxicity than adults.

Studies have shown that when foods containing MSG are combined with aspartame, blood glutamate levels are double what they would be if you ingested MSG alone. Virtually all processed foods contain one or more excitotoxins. Many contain three to five. When combined, their toxicity is magnified. This is very common in soups, frozen dinners, and chips.

MSG Hidden In Food

MSG is found hiding in innocent-sounding names like hydrolyzed protein, vegetable protein, soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate, whey protein, and natural flavoring, spices, enzymes, autolyzed yeast extract, stock, broth, and carrageenan.

One of the findings from Dr. Olney in 1968 found that all infants fed MSG as infants became grossly obese. This has been observed in virtually every animal species. It is so reproducible that feeding animals MSG is the method scientists use to produce obese animals for obesity research.

MSG Consumption

Since the 1980s, Americans have consumed 282,000 metric tons of MSG and 800 million pounds of aspartame every year. Every decade the amount of MSG doubles. These excitotoxins are found in foods, drinks, medications, vaccines, and even fertilizer.

Soybeans and Glutamate

Animals fed MSG early in life have significant reproduction problems including infertility. Soybeans contain one of the highest glutamate levels of any plant. Studies have shown that feeding soy to infant monkeys increased aggression 67% and led to antisocial animals. Another study covering 25 years, found people who ate soy had the greatest brain atrophy (shrinkage).

Parkinson's Disease

In the case of Parkinson's disease, several pesticides-rotenone in particular-can produce symptoms in experimental animals closely resembling the disease in humans. Studies have shown that pesticides not only trigger excitotoxicity within specific areas of the brain, but they also increase activation of cells called microglia cells that are closely associated with neurodegenerative diseases. The reason not all people develop Parkinson's is that only people with a hereditary or congenital defect hindering detoxification are sensitive. Yet, everyone will develop some damage including memory loss and difficulties concentrating over time.

Seizures

Seizures are caused by overactivity of the glutamate neurotransmission system in the brain. It is important to note that most  of the newer anti-seizure medications either block the glutamate receptor or lower brain glutamate levels. The problem with these medications is that glutamate is critical to memory, learning and many functions of the frontal lobe. Nutritional approaches do not radically block glutamate function in the brain, but rather, modulate it.

Aspartame

Dr.Russell L. Blaylock, M.D. reported that a number of young women have had seizures after drinking large amounts of aspartame-sweetened drinks. Aspartame can produce the same brain lesions as MSG. By removing most excitotoxins from their diet, many patients either stop having seizures or have far fewer and less intense seizures.
In summary, glutamate and other excitotoxins can trigger prolonged generation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation throughout the body, which leads to a number of chronic diseases including obesity, chronic fatigue syndrome, chemical sensitivity, HIV dementia, glaucoma, macular degeneration, osteoporosis, pulmonary disorders, bladder problems, sudden cardiac death, and cancer.

 Love Notes

Spending two weeks with our 15th and newest grandbaby was sheer JOY for us. Leaving him was tough as it always is but because we leave our grandkids in "good hands" as they have wonderful parents this makes it possible! =)

I'm posting here a wonderful "love note" from our son-in-law which proves my point! Our grandchildren call us MamaLaw and PapaLaw. It gets shortened to MaPaLaw in the poem. This is Healthy Relationship building at it's finest:

Sadly the two weeks are over, it's been such a priviledge

To have the famous MaPaLaw visit our small, humble village

We had promised amenities and the relaxation of your wishes

But you were stranded without Internet, and stuck doing dishes

You came to help us with children now that we were outnumbered

Holding a crying baby while his tired parents slumbered

You served as counselors and therapists where your expertise is clear

Giving our clients a shoulder to cry on and catch their alligator tears!

Unshaken by the drama, and all the chores, and the panic

You slaved away in the kitchen creating things wholesome and organic

And then back to our aide with tricks of tummy snuggles and catnip

Then off to errands of school, classes, and Idaho Falls shopping trips

We just love late night talks, your wisdom, and advice

While we share our stories and yummy desserts by the slice

And now off to bigger, warmer places, we pray you can thaw

As our hearts are full of more great memories of our cherished MaPaLaw

Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood
by Jeffrey Marx

Our Price: $6.03

Joe Ehrmann, a former NFL football star and volunteer coach for the Gilman high school football team, teaches his players the keys to successful defense: penetrate, pursue, punish, love. Love? A former captain of the Baltimore Colts and now an ordained minister, Ehrmann is serious about the game of football but even more serious about the purpose of life.

Season of Life is his inspirational story as told by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jeffrey Marx, who was a ball-boy for the Colts when he first met Ehrmann. Ehrmann now devotes his life to teaching young men a whole new meaning of masculinity. He teaches the boys at Gilman the precepts of his Building Men for Others program: Being a man means emphasizing relationships and having a cause bigger than yourself. It means accepting responsibility and leading courageously. It means that empathy, integrity, and living a life of service to others are more important than points on a scoreboard. Marx witnessed the most extraordinary sports program he'd ever seen, where players say "I love you" to each other and coaches profess their love for their players.

A wonderful true story that debunks false masculinity based on athletic ability, sexual conquest, and economic success and replaces that message from the media with a philosophy based on relationships (being the best husband, father, son, brother) and being engaged in a purpose/cause bigger than yourself. A must read!
