 Chocolate Ball Recipe
Healthier Revision from Raw Chef Wendy

Here's our favorite family treat which we've featured before but this time it's revised to be even healthier by Raw Chef Wendy. Thanks Wendy!

Ingredients:

* 1 cup (dry) oatmeal (I use Old Fashioned oats-I break them down with my hands so

they are a bit finer)

* 2/3 cup coconut flakes (unsweetened and lightly toasted in a dry frying pan)

* ½ cup raw almond butter

* ½ cup cacao nibs, soaked in water for 10 minutes, then rinsed.

* ¾ cup chopped raisins chopped fine (cranberries, dates, figs or other dried fruit would be good too)

* 1 tsp. raw cacao powder

* 1/4 cup raw honey (I use local raw honey)

* 1 tsp. vanilla extract (no alcohol)

* 2 teaspoons of glyconutrient combination--glyconutrients, vitamins/minerals and

antioxidants (optional)

Preparation:

Stir all ingredients together in a medium bowl until thoroughly mixed. Roll into ¾ inch sized

balls (I wear plastic gloves for rolling). Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 1 week. Makes about 20 balls.

What Can We Achieve?

Have you ever attempted to do something extraordinary for a whole year? Something like recording in a journal the JOY you experienced each day? Or reading one chapter in an inspirational book each evening? What about looking for the good in your spouse and recording your thoughts in a special journal so it can be gifted at the end of the year for him or her?

What about allowing yourself to indulge in desserts ONLY on a full moon? OR how about fitting in a new healthy living habit like walking 3 or 4 days a week with a lonely neighbor? Committing to doing even simple things like these for a whole year and journaling about your experience makes this an extraordinary thing! What could we learn? What could we acquire? What could we achieve simply because we took upon ourselves a challenge like this??

Is Soda Killing Your Kidneys?

New research suggests that drinking sodas raise your risk for kidney disease. Dr. Ryohei Yamamoto, MD, PhD (Osaka Univ Graduate School of Medicine in Japan) found that consuming two soft drinks per day increased excretion of protein in the urine, which is a hallmark of kidney dysfunction.

Another study led by Agustin Gonzalez-Vicente (Case Western Reserve University) found that moderate fructose intake increases the kidney's sensitivity to angiotensin II, a protein that regulates salt balance. This leads to increased salt reabsorption by cells in the kidneys, a finding that might help explain why consumption of high-fructose corn syrup as a sweetener may contribute to the epidemic of diabetes, obesity, kidney failure, and hypertension.

Dr. Anil Angarwal, a kidney specialist at Ohio State University, stated "The new study suggests that even individuals with normal kidney function are at risk for kidney damage if they drink too much soda." And soft drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup may be the most dangerous. "Fructose is sweeter than glucose, and doesn't cause feelings of satiety." It may cause damage via a different pathway than glucose. Instead of increasing blood-sugar levels, fructose may affect the kidneys.

There is no safe amount of soda. Dr. Jaime Uribarri, a kidney specialist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City was asked, "What's the bottom line?" He replied, "Drink water instead of soda." I simply say, "Ditto!"

 A Note from Angie

Happy New Year! I can hardly fathom that 2014 is already upon us. I know it will be a wonderful year! I know this because I choose to look for and see all that is right and good in the world. I choose to minimize the intake of "news" that is so full of the negative and I choose to believe that most people are good, honest, hard-working and just plain amazing! At least, that has been our experience as we travel this great country and beyond. It's such a pleasure to interact and rub shoulders with so very many of you. We truly feel blessed! We're looking forward to all that 2014 brings and wish for YOU, all that is happy, healthy and abundant!

Did You Know?

New Year's Resolution?

Very many of us start our New Year off by committing to better eating, better living and creating better habits. This is a good thing but often it is short lived because we bite off more than we can handle so we burn out quickly. Taking smaller steps over a long period of time can make a good intention hang around and be much more fruitful. For instance, many are recognizing the dangers of their soda addiction and would like to stop the habit. This can be daunting and nearly impossible if one just goes "cold turkey."

If soda is a bad habit for you, try cutting back by just ¼ can a day for a whole week. Then, the next week cut back by ½ can the whole week. The third week it would be ¾ can for another full week until finally the 4th week you are not drinking any. This is assuming you have ONLY one can of soda a day. If you drink many cans a day, the same principle applies--it will just take longer before you are drinking no soda. This very gradual way of weaning your body off the addiction will help in eliminating the bad habit. And, it works with whatever addiction you'd like to eliminate. Best of all, the New Year's resolutions become manageable and successful!

And Science Marches On...

Is Diet Soda The Better Option?

You may be surprised to learn that research consistently demonstrates that artificially sweetened no- or low-calorie drinks and other "diet" foods actually increase your appetite, lead to increased cravings for carbohydrates, and stimulate fat storage and weight gain.

Diet Soda Drinkers Suffer Same Health Issues As Regular Soda Drinkers

A report published in the 2013 journal Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism concludes that diet soda drinkers suffer the same health problems (type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and excessive weight gain) as those who drink regular soda! Dr. Sanjay Gupta reported on CNN (10 July 2013) that artificial sweeteners basically trick your body into thinking that it's going to receive sugar, but when the sugar doesn't arrive, your body signals that it needs more, which results in carb cravings. Most people give in to such signals and end up overeating on other foods and snacks.

Artificial Sweeteners Increase Weight Gain

Studies over the last three decades show that artificial sweeteners increase hunger. Of the three sweeteners studied, aspartame produced the most dramatic effects. Women experienced the greatest increase in hunger after chewing gum containing aspartame. "The highest aspartame concentrations had a time-dependent, biphasic effect on appetite, producing a transient decrease followed by a sustained increase in hunger ratings. Thus, the concentration of the sweetener, the sex of the subject, and the time after chewing, were all important determinants of whether 'sweetness' increased hunger (Physiology and Behavior 1990).

Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine (June 2010)

"...findings suggest that the calories contained in natural sweeteners may trigger a response to keep the overall energy consumption constant...Increasing evidence suggests that artificial sweeteners do not activate the food reward pathways in the same fashion as natural sweeteners." Americans are addicted to sweet flavors which appear to trigger a complex set of biological systems, pathways, and mechanisms that in the end lead to excess weight gain. Contrary to marketing claims, low- or no-calorie artificial sweeteners are more likely to help you pack on the pounds than shed them.

Appetite (2012 Study)

"Results showed that addition of either saccharin or aspartame to yogurt resulted in increased weight gain compared to addition of sucrose (table sugar)..." When your body gets a hit of sweet taste without the calories to go with it, it adversely affects your appetite control mechanisms, causing increased food cravings.

Health Hazards of Artificial Sweeteners

Cancer now surpasses heart disease as the number one killer of Americans under the age of 85. A study published in 2010 found aspartame induced cancers of the liver and lung in mice and rats. A more recent study, the most comprehensive and longest human study (spanning 22 years) found a clear association between aspartame and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and leukemia. Another study demonstrated that aspartame worsens insulin sensitivity to a greater degree than sugar!

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI)

The watchdog group, CSPI, recently downgraded its safety rating of sucralose (Splenda) from "safe" to "caution" suggesting it needs to be better tested because in 2012, an independent Italian laboratory announced that sucralose caused leukemia in mice that were exposed before birth.

With all these health concerns, why would someone drink artificially sweetened soda? I am not recommending drinking regular soda either. But it is clear that there is no benefit from the diet soda craze. The selling of soda is a $125 billion dollar industry in the U.S. ($300 billion globally). Drink water - your body was designed to perform optimally with that liquid source. You are 60% water by weight and your body requires water to function.

It's easy to see why sweet things are so tremendously addictive. As we become more educated to the dangers of processed foods and beverages, we see that dropping soda from our diet can result in huge benefits to our health.

Healthy Relationships

 Basking in Baby

Our New Year started off with the addition of another beautiful grandchild. Our 15th grandbaby came into the world on Jan 6th. This is joy with a capital J! We are basking in the joy of being with our daughter's family as we help her with the managing of her other two little ones while they settle into life with a new baby. Being available to help each other during these types of life's experiences is good, healthy living, relationship building. Not all of our "challenges" are joyful. When you're family, making it a priority to be there for each other not only lifts burdens and builds relationships but also makes for wonderful memories!
