 Fiber Full?

Here's a great recipe for getting much more fiber into your diet. My friend Ken Anderson shared it with me. He is an expert when it comes to health and wellness. You can read more of his advice on his blog:

http://www.naturalwellnesscall.blogspot.com/

Ingredients

2 tablespoons of each or any combination:

- Psyllium powder or whole seeds

- Chia seeds

- Raw Wheat Bran Flakes

- Raw Oat Bran Flakes

- Raw Rice Bran Flakes

- Raw Flaxseeds powdered or whole

- Raw Pumpkin Seeds, freshly ground

1 teaspoon of Slippery Elm powder

Directions

Place the above dry mixture in cereal bowl and then add water and/or juice to fill up the bowl completely.

Let it sit overnight in refrigerator so it will thicken. Take 1 teaspoon and mix in applesauce or put it in a smoothie or just eat it by itself 1 to 6 times a day with lots of water.

Great Books Bring Great Thoughts

As someone who didn't read my entire growing up years, it is amazing how much I now love reading and learning from great books! I have gleaned much wisdom and this has helped me to grow. I'm so grateful for it!

Here are some thoughts I recorded in my "value-captured" journal recently:

"When you're living in the fullness of life you begin to see that you have no limitations."

"Work harder on yourself than you do on your job and everything will change."

Helen Keller said, "The tragedy is not losing your sight, it's losing your vision."

"A can-do attitude is much more likely to succeed than a don't do, won't do, can't do attitude."

I always look forward to the next book which will inspire me with thoughts and ideas to help expand and grow me into the very best version of myself. I hope you find that great books do that for you too. Be sure to check out my "book pick" for this month's issue as I'm completely immersed in it now and it's a great read!

Nutrients From Food

Stephanie Dean from Baylor University's Outpatient Nutrition Counselling Center states, "The advantage to getting vitamins and minerals in foods is that too much can be toxic, and you rarely get toxic amounts from foods. For instance, vitamin A is crucial for cell development, which can help prevent an early miscarriage. However, an excess of vitamin A might lead to a miscarriage or birth defects. In addition, the body seems to better utilize nutrients in their natural state."

She also noted, "Potassium, which is so important in helping to maintain a normal blood pressure and the healthy functioning of smooth muscles iin the heart and intestines can, in excess, lead to heart palpitations or gastrointestinal distress."

Natural foods like spinach, kale, collard greens, swiss chard, and broccoli contain more amounts of vitamins and minerals when compared to other foods. But be sure not to overcook them because you can deplete them of 85% of their nutrient levels just by heating them too high (over 187 degrees). Supplements can add to diminished levels of vitamins and minerals lost in the processing and handling of your food. But always ensure that your supplements are plant-based and not synthetic to get the best bio-availability of nutrients. See our Consumer Awareness Guide to learn how to tell the difference between natural and synthetic on your supplement ingredient label.
 A Note from Angie

Angie Law

Greetings!

Today is my birthday. I was born on Mother's Day a few years ago (haha). What a day that must have been for my mom as I know what being 9 months pregnant is! Thanks mom! I hope all the wonderful women we have come to know over the years enjoyed Mother's Day this past Sunday. None of us would be here if not for our mother's and I for one, am truly so grateful for my mom. She has been an example of strength my whole life and always, always, without fail, an advocate and supporter of all her 6 kids!

For those of you who are missing your mom as my husband misses his, I hope the memories of her love for you made your heart happy as you celebrated her in thought!

We are in the Dallas, Texas area this month but be sure to check what classes may be coming to your city in the future (click here) and feel free to send those you know, love and care about to them.

Click below if you'd like to see the Consumer Awareness Guide. It will provide a great overview for deciphering the difference between natural and synthetic/inorganic sources for potentially harmful vitamin and mineral supplements.

Did You Know?
Something's Fishy With Our Fish Oil

There is a lot of confusion in the market place when it comes to dietary fatty acids. I listened to a lecture on this subject from a naturopathic doctor several years back and was surprised to learn that the fish oil supplement I had been taking was most likely full of pollution from the ocean! That was a comforting thought! Oh brother...here I was trying to do something good for me and yet in actuality what I thought was bringing good benefit was most likely not. I quickly got a lesson in how to determine which Omega 3 supplement was efficacious and which were not.

I learned that first and foremost you have to look to see if the fish oil is "molecularly distilled" or it may say "molecular distillation." This is a process which removes the pollution from the oil. But, there's more! Some companies KNOW that a wise consumer is looking for this molecular distillation process to be listed so they go ahead and put their cheap (not pure) oil through a molecular distillation machine so they can claim it IS. But since the oil is such poor quality it ends up mucking up their very expensive machines. So, they then have to add emulsifiers to the mix to keep the machine from getting ruined and THAT they don't have to spell out clearly on the label for us. We not only eat the poor quality fish oil but then we get it with all the emulsifiers in it too! This makes it difficult to know which fish oil would be the better choice.

We know we need good fats in our diet as it has been shown to positively impact health especially when it comes to heart and brain support. Eating nuts, seeds and avocados are a good way to get them. Bad fats, mostly derived from animals, can have adverse effect on our health. So, we want to be sure we get enough monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids into our diets. Choosing the right fish oil will ensure we are eating those good fats!

Sometimes you just have to get a recommendation from a trusted friend to know you are getting a good supplement. There are good ones to be found in the marketplace to be sure but you just have to know where to look and what to listen for. As always I am happy to recommend what I found after I threw the one away I had been taking!

And Science Marches On...an analysis
Vitamin D Surprise

A research letter published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine, 11 Feb, 2013, documents the experience of Kaiser Permanente scientists in Portland, OR who were studying the effects of Vitamin D on postmenopausal women. When they sought to verify the potency of compounded vitamin D-3 pills used in the study they found alarming variability. Only one-third of the pills fell within 10% of the stated dose. Intigued, they checked other compounded vitamin D pills and found potency ranged from 23% to 146% of the stated dose. They then purchased 55 bottles of over-the-counter vitamin D-3 ranging from 1,000 IU to 10,000 IU from 12 suppliers in Portland stores.

Their Conclusions

"The cholecalciferol (vitamin D-3) content of Over-The-Counter (OTC) and compounded vitamins was highly variable; potency ranged from 9% to 146%. In our test, just over one-half of OTC pills and only one-third of compounded pills met USP Convention standard....As more people take vitamin D supplements, it is critical that health care providers and patients understand that cholecalciferol potency may vary widely."

Adding to the insult, Consumer Reports published an analysis of vitamin D supplements and found up to a 36% deviation range in potency from what was listed on the label. More worrisome, were the unacceptable levels of lead found in nine out of 12 vitamin D-calcium combination pills. ConsumerLab.com also tests vitamins and recently reported finding almost 20% of the vitamin D products failing quality standards. In its study of multivitamins, ConsumerLab.com found nearly one-third of the 38 products analyzed not meeting acceptable criteria.

Consumers

Most consumers assume they can safely rely on label information. They believe that someone like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) monitors the quality and potency of supplement products. But this is not the case as the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act granted only limited authority to the FDA to regulate supplements. Consumers must rely on the integrity of the manufacturer and  third-party laboratories like the NSF or ConsumerLab.com to ensure their supplements are worth taking.

Family Help Is A Moving Experience

Our oldest daughter, Chalise, and her family are moving from Nevada to Texas. That's a big move when you have 5 children - one of which is a new baby!

I was so touched to see how our youngest daughter, Kelsie, offered to fly out to help her sister pack up the house! It was totally unsolicited and during those two and a half days they worked, laughed and were exhausted together!

Another daughter, Lindsey, willingly offered to take several of Chalise's children in the middle of the move to accommodate the remainder of the family flying to Washington D.C. where their son, Bennett, was representing the state of Nevada in a web site competition. Her help during those needed days is also a tremendous blessing in a cross country ordeal.

We love to see that our children are such good friends and enjoy being there to help whenever possible. When families love and support each other this is healthy relationship building at its finest.

Abundance - The Future Is Better Than You Think

by Peter H. Diamandis

Peter Diamandis is a technology entrepreneur turned philanthropist. His bold, contrarian view claims the world has the ability to meet and exceed the basic needs of every man, woman and child on the planet. Abundance for all is within our grasp. He introduces the ways exponentially growing technologies and three other powerful forces are conspiring to better the lives of billions. In his book, Abundance, he establishes hard targets for change and lays out a strategic roadmap for governments, industry and entrepreneurs which gives plenty of reason for optimism in a pessimistic world.
