 Raw-licious Taco Wrap
By Loralyn Horning

Ingredients

1½ cups raw walnuts, soaked in distilled water for 1-2 hours-very important

1 tsp. Taco Seasoning or more to taste

2 tsp. Nama Shoyu - raw soy sauce

¾ tsp. ground coriander

1½ tsp. ground cumin

1/8 tsp. cayenne

Directions

Take the soaked walnuts (be sure to allow the nuts to dry out thoroughly in a paper towel. If they are too wet, then the mix gets gooey and isn't good.

Mix all the ingredients in a food processor. The final mix should look like ground beef, so do not over process or it will be too fine.

Serve in romaine (or bib) lettuce leaves and top with sliced tomatoes, sliced avocado, and cheese (we like the almond cheese). We also like to put fresh salsa with it.

We ate these with Loralyn Horning when she had us to her home for lunch and they were sooo yummy! Thanks Loralyn!

Exercise That Lasts

January is the month for gym memberships! I remember when I taught water aerobics at a local gym for 10 years and every January it was the same thing...my classes grew! But sure enough, a few weeks into it, they began dwindling back to the same "core" folks that were always there. That's HUMAN NATURE! It's our desire to do better! We want to get in shape, eat better, feel better, sleep better, etc...so we go "gung-ho" pushing, pushing, pushing ourselves to just DO IT and then we fizzle out. I too, have experienced this same thing!

What's the solution? For me, I've had to just love myself. Yep, just understand that I am good enough and not to be too hard on ME. I've had to find what I ENJOY and not do something that makes me crazy over the long haul. I LOVE water aerobics but I had to give it up as it wasn't practical with our travel schedule. So, I've had to learn HOW to exercise and eat right when we're on the road all the time. It's not easy. But, there are no excuses either. I know I can do what's necessary but I need to choose what's REAL for me...something I can sustain over the long haul so I don't fizzle out in a few weeks.

And, for my situation, I need something I can easily do in a 3 foot square (or less) as that's usually all the space I have in a hotel room or a bedroom in a home. I've settled on something I love and something that's practical for me -- DANCING! Yes! I love to dance. So I've put some good music on my Ipad and I just dance! I love that no one can see me--haha...well, Larry can but he loves me anyway! And, I love that I never tire of dancing! =) I also can stretch in a small space. This works for me. This is something I can sustain and it doesn't require me finding a gym in the hotel or in a strange city. I can do it anywhere!

We NEED to be conscientious about being fit. But be gentle with yourself too and think of what you can do to be a better you without beating yourself up. Find something you enjoy, something you can incorporate and sustain over time...the goal is not to be a superhuman man or woman but to just be working towards better health and fitness. Make it a great year!
 A Note from Angie

Angie LawGreetings!

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all enjoyed the holidays and are looking forward to the coming months! While we all are aware of the hard things surrounding us in our world, I hope we all choose to focus on what's right and good. There's so much to be grateful for!

Larry and I are truly looking forward to interacting with many of you again this year in your communities as we have been getting our schedule filled up already. Be sure to check what classes may be coming to your city (click here) and send those you know, love and care about to them! There's so much work to be done in order to bring exposure to the masses--giving everyone the option to make a decision they feel is best for themselves because they KNOW the options! =) I never could have dreamed there was a field of science which could impact my immune system in remarkable ways. I'll forever be grateful for my beautiful friend, Linda who gave ME exposure to it nearly 8 ½ years ago!

Did You Know?
Baby Steps To Real Food

Christopher Elwell | Dreamstime.comTaking baby steps towards better eating is a way to gradually make it easier to enjoy REAL food! The first time I ate in a "whole, real food" place I remember not liking it! Ohmygoodness, I had NO IDEA really what REAL food tasted like! Food that is minimally cooked, minimally prepared and/or eaten raw is REAL.

Over time, I adjusted and now, I not only loathe "fast food" but it's also really hard to eat anything that is cooked to death or highly processed. I always prefer whole, real food even if I don't always have the option for it.

If you are where I was and have not adjusted to the taste of REAL, then take baby steps by at least eliminating hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup. Just starting with these two ingredients will go a long way in helping you to adjust to better foods over time. This makes it much easier to sustain lasting changes if you don't try to drastically change everything all at once.

And Science Marches On...
Glyconutrients Impact Bone Health

Gilbert R. Kaats, PhD, reported in his book, Restructuring Body Composition that an analysis of a small randomized, placebo-controlled double-blinded study suggested "the intriguing possibility that consumption of glyconutrional plant polysaccharides, with an accompanying behavior modification plan, can lead to short-term increases in BMD (bone mineral density)."

"Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is not a measure of osteoporosis any more than cholesterol is a measure of heart disease or blood pressure is a meausure of hppertension. As one researcher put it: 'We need to recognize that all of these values reflect a continuum of risk--the higher the blood pressure or lipid levels, or the lower the BMD, the greater the risk of the complication. At some point, the risk is high enough that an intervention [treatment] is warranted to lower risk. Inexpensive interventions, such as lifestyle alterations involving diet, exercise...can be applied to lower risk in virtually everyone at even minimal risk.'"

Bottom Line

"Preserving or increasing lean (muscle) and bone appears to prevent sarcopenia (the progressive loss of lean with age) and osteopenia (low bone mineral density), neither of these are disease states although they both will increase the probability of diseases...Glyconutritonal plant polysaccharides appear to have a positive impact on lean and BMD or bone health."

Healthy Relationships

 Wallace Family
Grandbaby Gianna - Our Twelfth

When a new baby comes into a home this is a perfect opportunity to involve the older siblings in the love and care of the baby (assuming the new baby is not the first one!). We have been blessed to be with our oldest daughter, Chalise and her husband, Danny as they've welcomed their 5th child into their home. What joy it's been to see the older siblings love their new baby sister. All have taken turns holding the baby, running for diapers and burp rags, and anything else their recovering mom needs! This is Healthy Relationship building at its finest! =)

Bone Health

Published in the New York Times, Tara Parker-Pope's article entitled, Drugs to Build Bones May Weaken Them, addresses concerns for the long-term use of bone-building drugs for osteoporosis. The concern rises mainly from a series of case reports showing a rare type of leg fracture that shears straight across the upper thighbone after little or no trauma. Fractures in this sturdy part of the bone typically result from car accidents or in the elderly and frail. But the case report show the unusual fracture pattern in people who have used bone-building drugs called bisphosphonates for five years or more. 'Many of these women will tell you they thought the bone broke before they hit the ground,' says Dr. Dean G. Lorich, associate director of orthopedic trauma surgery at NewYouk-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell and the Hospital for Special Surgery.'

Bones are in a constant state of remodeling-dissolving microscopic bits of old bone, a process called resorption, and rebuilding new bone. After age 30 or so, a woman's bones start to dissolve faster than they can be rebuilt, and after menopause she may develop thin, brittle bones that are easily broken. Bisphosphonates, including Fosamax, Procter & Gamble's Actonel and GlaxoSmithKline's Boniva, slow this process. But some experts are concerned that microscopic bone cracks that result from normal wear and tear are not repaired when the bone remodeling process is suppressed.

Dr. Susan M. Ott, associate professor of medicine at the University of Washington, states, "My major caution is that the bisphosphonates should not be used in people who don't have a high risk of fracture."

What Can We Do?

Physical exercise and proper nutrition that includes calcium and vitamin D3 are suggested to support bone strength. Strength training and weight-bearing exercises are best for bones, as opposed to swimming or elliptical training which are too low-impact. Mayo Clinic offers some exercises specifically for osteoporosis.

Calcium-rich foods include almonds, broccoli, kale, canned salmon with the bones, oats and soy products. Vitamin D is rich in sunlight and oily fish as well as egg yolks.

And finally, we must supply our bodies with the critical nutrients necessary to function properly, including glyconutrients.
