Food for Thought

 Almond Milk

If you've never tried almond milk you're in for a treat! I use it in baking (which makes everything creamier), in shakes, smoothies and over cereal. You can easily purchase it in any grocery store these days but if you want to save money you can also easily make it yourself! This is a much healthier alternative to cow's milk and, in fact, is utilized by the human body much better than cow's milk. And, you'll get 40% more calcium too.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup soaked almonds

  • 1/2 cup soft dates

  • 5 cups of water

  • 1 vanilla bean (you can get vanilla beans on line for less than in the stores) or 1 tablespoon of pure vanilla

  • 1 pinch of salt (Himalayan salt or any good salt)

Directions

Put it all in your blender and blend until smooth. Keep refigerated.

Thanks to Juliette Holdaway for this great recipe!

How Will I Measure
My Life?

Larry shared with me a book we got as a gift (thanks Andy!), How Will You Measure Your Life by Clayton Christensen (see book pick below). I love the questions posed in the book that beg consideration. Am I allocating my resources for the things that matter most? Do I have a strategy for my life? Do I have real purpose? How will I measure my life?

I love pondering these questions and am delighted I can answer each with confidence! Good things to ponder...good food for thought.

 Knowledge is Power

Ascorbic Acid

Is Not

Vitamin C Complex

Ascorbic Acid represents only 5% of Vitamin C Complex. It is the antioxidant wrapper of Vitamin C Complex. Vitamin C Complex contains rutin, bioflavonoids, Factor K, Factor J, Factor P, Tyrosinase, Ascorbinogen, and mineral co-factors in addition to Ascorbic Acid. If any of these parts are missing, there is no vitamin activity. Only Vitamin C Complex cures scurvy.

Synthetically made Ascorbic Acid is often sold as Vitamin C. It is made from corn starch and sulfuric acid. It does not have any of the other co-factors - the other 95% of the Vitamin C Complex molecule. 90% of all Ascorbic Acid in the U.S. is manufactured by one of the world's largest drug manufacturers in New Jersey. This synthetic vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is purchased and rebranded under other company labels and sold to unsuspecting consumers as vitamin C.

 A Note from Angie

Angie LawGreetings!

We're on the road again. We made our way to Florida going through the gulf coast states. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by hurricane Isaac. We've seen how easily those areas could flood as the water was right up to the roads we travelled and this was the day before Issac came ashore. It's difficult when Mother Nature's fury hits-- we just want you all to know we are praying for the recovery efforts well underway.

On a happier note we were blessed to be in Orlando, Florida with 4 of our grandchildren. Spending time with them and Micky Mouse and other fanciful characters was sheer delight--nothing like the innocence of childhood to put the cares of the world aside for a time. It was a welcomed reprieve and JOY at its finest!

Also, I'm happy to report the Consumer Awareness Guide is now available! Be sure to read below for all the details on how you can read it free on-line.

Did You Know?
Consumer Awareness Guide

Christopher Elwell | Dreamstime.com Synthetic vitamins and minerals are not just 'NOT helpful' for you--they are actually harmful. This is something I've come to understand better in the past 6 months. I always wanted to choose what was REAL over something my body wouldn't recognize when supplementing. But the bottles all say "NATURAL" and I had no idea how to really decipher those labels. Could they say "natural" if they weren't? I figured if it said "natural," then it must be "natural" for my body. NOT SO! But how can anyone know?

Well, it's not easy and there is so much deception. And of course, the bottom line matters. So, we as consumers are at a loss most of the time when deciding what to supplement with and what to avoid. Larry has done extensive study on this subject. I asked him to put together a Consumer Awareness Guide which will help decipher it all into manageable pieces. Click here to print in PDF form or to just read it online:

Consumer Awareness Guide

The option to purchase them in a tri-fold brochure is coming soon...this will give you the ability to share them if you'd like!

Feeding our bodies with the raw materials they must have in order for our immune systems to function properly is vital for our well being. It's tough when we get most of our education from advertisements so we hope this guide will bring some clarity for you as it did for me!

And Science Marches On...

What's Natural About Synthetic Vitamins?

Did you know that 95% of all vitamin supplements sold in America are synthetic vitamins? Synthetic vitamins are isolated chemicals derived from petroleum and coal tar designed to mirror natural vitamin's carbon structure. These man-made, synthetic vitamins occur nowhere in nature. They lack the transporters, minerals and co-factors associated with naturally occurring vitamins. They are cheap to make and pharmaceutical companies make most of them. It turns out that they are also deadly.

Scientific Studies Demonstrate Synthetic Vitamins Increase Mortality Risk

A study involving 18,314 smokers and asbestos workers given synthetic beta-carotene and vitamin A was halted when rates of death from lung cancer increased 46% and death from cardiovascular disease increased 26% over the placebo group (New England Journal of Medicine, 1996).

A study involving 22,000 pregnant women given synthetic vitamin A was halted because birth defects increaseed 400% (New England Journal of Medicine, 1995).

A meta-analysis of 47 clinical trials involving supplementation of synthetic vitamin A, beta-caroteen, and vitamin E at doses larger than commonly found in a balanced diet increased mortality risk. Researchers pointed out that their observations did not apply to natural antioxidants (vitamins) such as those found in fruits and vegetables (Journal of American Medical Association, 28 Feb 2007).

Natural Vitamins

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Deptartment of Agriculture (USDA) have no definition as to what constitutes 'natural.' Most people equate 'natural' as 'found in nature.' The problem is that petroleum is found in nature and so synthetic vitamins can claim to be 'natural.' But that doesn't mean petroleum is good for you to digest!

Only natural vitamins come in a food matrix containing a family of other important factors like other vitamins, minerals, enzymes, flavonoids, antioxidants, carotenoids, and phytosterols which control the way the body recognizes, metabolizes, and uses them.

Many 'natural' vitamin supplements and foods have synthetics added to increase potency or to standardize the vitamin amount depleted by the manufacturing/preservation process. Words like 'enriched' or 'fortified' indicate the presence of synthetics. Marketing claims of 'natural' can have as little as 10% truly natural with the rest being synthetic vitamins added at the end of the manufacturing process. This is done to make processed food, juices, or synthetic supplements look healthy or natural.

Read the Label

Check the back of your label to see if you are actually getting a true plant-based, natural vitamin. The list of vitamins will say something like, "Vitamin C (acerola cherries)" The parentheses containing the plant source has to follow the vitamin to be plant-based. If there is no parentheses or no source given, then it is a synthetic. Always check to ensure your supplements are plant-based. It really is a matter of life and death.

Healthy Relationships

 Grandchildren
 The BIG of Little Things...

Spending time with 4 of our grandchildren at Disney World this past week was something that doesn't happen often! And, in fact many people may never get that type of treat! I most likely will never get to be at Disney World with ALL of my 12 grandchildren in my lifetime so I realize it was a rare opportunity and therefore I soaked up every minute!

Very often we think "special" moments together can only come when some grand event is scheduled.  But quite the contrary, special moments can be made in ordinary situations. If we wait for grand events, we may find we've missed the priceless daily moments which in the end make up most of our healthy relationship building opportunities! It's truly the little things that become the grand things which really make all the difference!

In 2012 world-renowned innovation expert Clayton M. Christensen gave a powerful speech to the Harvard Business School's graduating class. Drawing upon his business research, he offered a series of guidelines for finding meaning and happiness in life. He used examples from his own experiences to explain how high achievers can all too often fall into traps that lead to unhappiness. The speech was memorable not only because it was deeply revealing but also because it came at a time of intense personal reflection: Christensen had just overcome the same type of cancer that had taken his father's life. As Christensen struggled with the disease, the question "How do you measure your life?" became more urgent and poignant, and he began to share his insights more widely with family, friends, and students. This book is full of inspiration and wisdom. He provides incredible insights into meeting the challenges of life and business.
