I love this quote:
Remind yourself regularly that you are better than you think you are. Successful people are not supermen. Success does not require a super-intellect. Nor is there anything mystical about success. And success isn't based on luck. Successful people are just ordinary folks who have developed belief in themselves and what they do. Never, yes never, sell yourself short.
~ David Schwartz, Ph.D.
All of us are just ordinary people, even the most "successful" people are. But those who develop a belief in themselves and do what they believe will meet a need and then move forward meeting that need, end up doing extraordinary things. It's in all of our realm of opportunity to do extraordinary things!

Different Forms of Inositol
IP-6 is only one form of inositol. Inositol is a sugar formed by 6 carbon atoms, 6 oxygen atoms, and 12 hydrogen atoms. This combination of atoms can also form glucose but the atoms are arranged differently.
Myo-inositol
There are actually several forms of inositol, each with subtle differences in the arrangement of atoms. Myo-inositol is the most common form and is being investigated for a possible beneficial role in depression and anxiety.
IP-6
IP-6 is formed by substituting phosphate groups (a phosphorous atom and 3 oxygen atoms) for each of the 6 hydroxyl groups (an oxygen atom and hydrogen atom) of inositol. So, IP-6 is chemically distinct from myo-inositol and is being investigated for preventing tumors associated with prostate, lung, colon, breast, skin, and other areas.
In With the Good!
Good sugar continues to be implicated in many beneficial immune system processes. The lack of these sugars in our diet has major ramifications for our health.

Greetings!
It's July! My goodness time is flying as we've been on the road...but we are enjoying our trip meeting with wonderful people as we continue teaching our Introduction to the Science of Glycobiology class.
The shorter, synopsis version (of our original class we've taught since 2004) is better geared for the lay-person and is now available on DVD and can be purchased at GlycoTools.com. It's called A Wellness Cellution. We have received great feedback as we've been teaching it live around the country.
We are now in Springfield, MO area and will celebrate the birth of our country here! It's wonderful knowing there are many great people who will also be celebrating around our nation with us! How blessed we feel to live in America...we don't take it for granted that we enjoy the freedoms we have and we thank those who protect those freedoms. God Bless America -- Happy 4th of July!

Going Green
Since there's not much nutrition in iceberg lettuce (like none!), and very little in Romaine lettuce, I always choose the mixed greens. I didn't like mixed greens when I first started eating them years ago but now, I feel it isn't a good salad without them!
The greens used in a 'mixed-green' salad can vary but most contain between 4 to 10 types - these are typical:
- Arugula
- Romaine
- Swiss chard
- Spinach
- Herbs
- Radicchio
- Green Oak are typical.
Mixed greens originated as weeds in the Mediterranean and were introduced to the United States by Christopher Columbus. Eating a small serving of mixed greens in a salad is the equivalent of 2 to 3 cups of vegetables. They taste hearty and add even a peppery bite depending on the variety. I love them!

Inositol (IP-6)
There has been a lot of attention around IP-6 recently. Dr. Oz devoted a portion of his show in February to discussing the benefits being documented in research studies. Lets talk about some of the basics.
Another Healthy, Nutrient-Sugar
What exactly is Inositol? Inositol hexaphosphate (IP-6) is a naturally occurring sugar found in grains, beans, brown rice, corn, sesame seeds, wheat bran, and other high fiber foods. Many researchers believe the health benefits are due to its antioxidant, immune-enhancing, and cardiovascular-supporting activities within the body. Animal research indicates significant protective and growth regulating effects on cells of the colon, breast, and prostate. Animal trials have demonstrated anti-cancer activity against tumors associated with colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia, pancreatic cancer, and rhabdomyosarcomas. Studies Show... Human trials are lacking but Dr. AbulKalam Shamsuddin, MD, PhD, and Professor of Pathology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore has investigated this sugar since 1975. He has written a book called IP6 + Inositol: Nature's Medicine For The Millennium!: Discover How A Cocktail of Simple Molecules Can Prevent And Fight Cancer And Other Diseases. This book documents much of his research. Studies show that IP-6 can help fight bacterial and fungal infections besides cancer. Dietary inositol is also helpful in inhibiting crystallization of calcium salts in the urine and consequently may reduce the risk of kidney stone development. IP-6 is found in the bran or germ portions of whole grains. Unfortunately, the bran and germ are the parts stripped out from our food supply when grains are refined so IP-6 is missing from our modern diet. Profound Nutrient Not Found in Modern Diet
This is another example of a critical sugar which has a profound effect on immune system function but is not in our modern diet. Grinding your own grains to ensure you get the living nutrition contained in the bran and germ (not just the endosperm) is important for good health. Science is only now beginning to peer deep enough to even see the thousands of unidentified elements within food. They are slowly validating the importance of critical nutrients seldom mentioned in our medical or nutritional literature. Staying away from processed foods and eating whole foods as close to their original state is the only safe way to wellness. You still have to supplement because even our non-processed food have lost much of their nutritional value over the last 50 years. Always supplement with plant-based vitamins, minerals, and glyconutrients. They do not cause harm within the body. They will support normal human physiology. They allow your immune system to do the things it was designed to do and the things it knows how to do if only given the raw ingredients necessary to do its job. Inositol is found in mother's breast milk and occurs in plant-based supplements utilizing stabilized rice bran. |

Water Piñatas
The lazy HOT days of summer can be a great excuse to get out and have some fun with water!
Kids love water play and doing it with YOU makes it even more special...building relationships that last a lifetime require a bit of effort but give lots of return over the years.
How about hanging a bunch of balloons filled with water (big balloons are the best for this) between two trees. "Threading" a string through the knotted tops of the balloons and then securing both ends to the trees will make for a fun "water piñata." OR you can just hang them from the swingset bars. Either way it's a great way for everyone to cool off! |

I have a selection of recommended books...
which have nothing to do with education in Glycobiology but have everything to do with personal growth which I believe has been a huge part of my "wellness" journey. There is so much we can do in working to improve the quality of our lives. Reading for the wellness of our soul is a part of the whole. | |

The Real Thomas Jefferson
(American Classic Series)
by Andrew M. Allison
by National Center for Constitutional Studies
Paperback
The Real Thomas Jefferson lets you meet the man as he really was - rather than as interpreted by historians. The book tells much of his exciting story in his own words. You get to meet a man who lost his wife when she was only 33 and lost four children, each before the age of three. He created the masterpiece, The Declaration of Independence, at the young age of 33. He served as governor of war-torn Virginia and once escaped capture by the British by only minutes. He was one of the geniuses behind the American Constitution even though he was serving as an ambassador in France at the time. He nearly lost his first presidential election to Aaron Burr, a scoundrel who later may have committed treason. A true renaissance man, skilled in farming, scientific experimentation, practical inventions, economics, political philosophy, and statesmanship. His words are still prophetic as we face the challenges of our modern world.
