Uses for 87-1483 and 87-1484 NAHX and PTLX Reporting Marks

Modelers interested in building a grain fleet of covered hoppers can now benefit from multiple companies offering the Pullman Standard 4750. Product offerings are painted with data only or simply just painted gray. Both offer a speedy way to tailor to one's specific taste. AccuRail's offering is more of an "operator's model" while the Tangent is highly detailed to match the prototype railcars down to the brake rigging.

Both the NAHX and PTLX leased 4750 Covered Hoppers can be modeled using the 87-1483 and 87-1484 decal sheets. There are N-scale counterparts as well 60-1483 and 60-1484 for the fine N-scale products available on the market.

Two prototypes referenced for this article:
NAHX http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=51352
PTLX http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=70177

Both cars could easily be modeled with either the AccuRail or the Tangent models

Additional sets for the PS data:

The PTLX car has black ends and underframe so some masking may be involved on both the Tangent and AccuRail versions to correctly duplicate that 4750.  My recommendation is to use the lettering closer to the bottom of the sheet for the PTLX cars. The 4" white end data can be acquired from 87-1484

The NAHX car would utilize the NAHX reporting marks from 87-1483 be sure to use the reporting marks without the periods. Both the Tangent car and AccuRail offerings will not require masking and can be gloss coated and decaled straight away. A few may prefer starting from an undecorated model and painting from there. My recommendation for color would be Testors 2077 Lichtgrau RLM63 or any light gray that matches your prototype.
