Not An Extreme Makeover:PFE 40' Ice Reefer
By Al Skinner
Sometimes we change our choice of railroads to model for various reasons. Instead of buying new cars, we can do like real railroads and repaint our existing rolling stock. Also like real railroads, it gives us a chance to upgrade older equipment. This forty-foot Pacific Fruit Express car started out as an old Atlas N scale Illinois Central reefer with cast-on details and Rapido couplers. I carefully stripped the paint off the shell, sanded off the cast on side ladders and trimmed off the thick stirrups. I replaced them with separate detail part ladders and brass wire bent and glued in position. I also used brass wire to form the prototypical center stirrups. After repainting according to the paint scheme provided by the MS PFE Express 40' Cars (60-501) instruction sheet, I applied new PFE decals, replaced the stock trucks with MicroTrains trucks. Now I had a "new" car almost identical to any factory-painted model I could buy.
