Southern Pacific Cement Hoppers

By Rick Selby

The Southern Pacific and subsidiary, Cotton Belt, had a vast cement hopper fleet. Throughout the service lives of these cars, no two became alike. Many were reweighed, repainted, or faded and weathered beyond their as delivered livery. One of the newer released decal sheets 87-1390 and 60-1390 will yield very accurate lettering for the various models of these cars. Many features commercially unavailable in RTR (including the faded Red/Yellow lettering revealing a Gray character) can be achieved with this decal set.

Three additional decal sets should be used with the main set for additional lettering options. This includes:
ACI Labels - MC-4280 for HO/60-4280 for N
COTS Panels - MC-5003 for HO/60-5003 for N
Wheel Dots - MC-5012 for HO/60-5012 for N

More prototype and modeling information on this car is available here:
http://www.trainlife.com/magazines/pages/790/51578/august-1977-page-26
As delivered the SSW lettering was not very legible after a few years of service.
Many cars for both SP and SSW were repainted in big black block lettering making the data and such much easier to read.

Check out the YouTube video of Rick's SP and SSW Cement Hoppers descend the legendary Tehachapi Loop, on the La Mesa Model Railroad Club layout in San Diego.
