DINNER & DISCUSSION RSVP

Our first Dinner & Discussion of the school year will be on Tuesday, October 13,from 6:30-8:00.  Please RSVP to Peter Hodne at [email protected] by Friday, October 9 with the names of adults and children attending.

This year we have planned two Dinner & Discussion evenings at Highlands.  The dates are: Tuesday, October 13 and Tuesday, April 12.

The first Dinner & Discussion is coming up soon.  The format for the Dinner & Discussions will remain the same as in the past.  They begin at 6:30 and end at 8:00. Dinner & Discussions are for all families at Highlands.  There will be a potluck dinner followed by a session for adults and a session for kids.

An important part of the evening has been the wonderful food that people brought from different cultures. We invite you to bring food to share at the Dinner & Discussion on October 13.  We will begin the evening with a potluck dinner for kids and adults.

After dinner we will have a session for adults and a session for kids.  The adult session will focus race and culture and how it relates to schools.  Blanca Diaz de Leon, who is a cultural liaison for the Edina Public Schools, will share her experiences with schools in Mexico and schools in the United States.  We will use a World Cafe model to help us with our discussion that will follow.  The session for kids will also focus on race & culture.

These Dinner & Discussions are designed to help us build understanding and to strengthen our community.  I hope you are planning to attend.

Vision and Hearing Screening

Each year Highlands administers hearing and vision screening to all Highlands students.
The screenings will be on Wednesday, September 30 and October 1, 2015.  Kindergarteners, 1st grade, and 2nd Graders are screened for Hearing and 1st, 3rd, and 5th Graders are screened for Vision.  If you have a child that is not in these parameters, but you would like to have your child screened on these days, please contact Heidi Youngdahl at
[email protected].  To accomplish this in a timely and organized fashion, we've relied on PTO volunteers the help usher the students through the process and assist with the screenings. We are in great need of volunteers to make it happen!
We need 16 volunteers to help out throughout those 2 days. Please consider giving your time.
You can go to the Highlands PTO page and click on volunteer. http://highlandspto.com/volunteer/

Thank you very much!

DONATIONS ARE NEEDED FOR THE AUCTION
We need lots of donations to make this year's auction a success. Some ideas include:  kids activities, getaways (travel/hotel), spa or salon, technology items, services, event tickets, golf etc.  Please no memorabilia, used items, jewelry or apparel. Visit the PTO website to complete a donation form.

HOST A SMALL GATHERING
Small Gatherings are a great way to build new friendships and make connections within the Highlands' community.  Each gathering is a scheduled social activity for a limited number of individuals to attend.  Participants buy a spot to attend the event, and all proceeds go to Highlands.  We encourage hosts to choose a favorite hobby or activity to share with others.  Here is a list of ideas.

CASH
You can keep it simple and make a cash donation at the PTO website. Cash donations support our wine and spirits games as well as our auction.  Any funds not needed for the event will go directly into the classroom.

WINE & SPIRITS
Back by popular demand - our wine and spirits games! We need donations to make these games happen. Bottles of wine and spirits can be dropped at Libby Engelsma's  (4114 Morningside Rd) or Mari Melin's (5404 Chantrey Rd.)  Please no beer.

Thank you for your generous support of our school!

Trivia Corner

In the early days of the telephone, operators would pick up a call and use the phrase, "Well, are you there?". It wasn't until 1895 that someone suggested answering the phone with the phrase "number please?"

The word "lethologica" describes the state of not being able to remember the word you want.

Stressed is Desserts spelled backwards.

On this day in 1965
Willie Mays, at the age of 34, became the oldest man to hit 50 home runs in a single season. He had also set the record for the youngest to hit 50 ten years earlier.
