EHS Media Center-Fun Changes are Happening!

Parents,

The next time you are at EHS, please stop by the Media Center.  Over the past few years, we have been on a journey to update our space and we'd love for you to see the changes.

Physical Space
We've created different sorts of learning spaces for students, places for students to work independently, spaces for students to collaborate, places for students to read quietly and areas where students can rearrange the furniture to fit how they want to work.  All of our changes are chronicled at the
EHS Media Center web site.

Print Collection
This fall, we rearranged the fiction books by genre.  Our goal in grouping similar books together was to make it easier for students to find books that match their interests.  Also, there are shelf markers next to each book that can be found in Overdrive, our ebook collection.

It is an exciting time in school libraries, as we purposefully update our space to reflect what research tells about how students learn.  We're excited about these changes and based upon student survey results, they are, too!

Please feel free to stop in the next time you are in the building!

New this semester

College and Career Center (CCC)

is open all day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:15-4:15 to help individual students on a drop-in basis with their post-secondary planning.

The CCC is a great place to get help with:

  • College search and application process

  • Registering for ACT or SAT exams

  • Writing college essays and personal statements

  • Researching and writing scholarship applications

  • Financial aid forms

  • Career exploration

  • Writing resumes

  • Job applications and interviewing skills

We expanded our scope of services and the physical space for the CCC.  We will continue to host over 200 colleges who send their representatives to meet with our students.  In addition, students can stop by during their free time (study hall, passing time, collaborative lunch, after school) to get their questions answered.  We are located in Room 310.  No appointment is necessary.

Furthermore, we work in collaboration with the counseling department.  We do not replace your relationship with your assigned counselor, but supplement it.  The counselors are your primary source of information and who you ought to meet with regularly; we are an additional resource to help you navigate the process of preparing for life after high school.

The center is staffed by Tri Pham tri.pham@edinaschools.org or 952-848-3836 and trained community volunteers.  We are able to provide personalized and specific help for students who drop-in.  If we can't answer your questions, we know how to help you find the answer to keep you moving along in your planning.

Passion Project Fair - Pre AP 10 Class  -  ALL ARE WELCOME

April 28th 9:15 am - 12:45 pm Media Center, Commons, Community Room

Pre-AP 10 English class is a year-long research process.  In the early weeks of the school year, sophomores were asked to identify a topic about which they were passionate and wanted to learn more.  Their passions varied from rising sea levels to Internet piracy to the growing epidemic of sports-related concussions.  Next, students began conducting research, outlining their ideas, drafting and, eventually, putting the finishing touches on their ten-page Passion Project papers.  After writing the paper, students moved their learning outside the classroom walls through a service learning project that allowed them to take specific action around their selected topic.

The Passion Project Fair will give students an opportunity to share with teachers, fellow students, parents, and community members just a fraction of what they learned while writing their papers, highlight their service learning activity, and share reasons why their selected topic is their passion.  Students will begin the day with a keynote kickoff, and then will rotate through three sessions of presentations, viewing and analyzing fellow students' presentations, and guest speakers.  All are welcome to attend for all or part of the day! Pre-AP 10 English teachers will communicate more information to parents and students.

Congratulations to the Edina Science Bowl Sophomore Team

The team consists of all  sophomores and they placed 5th out of the  32 teams at the Minnesota Academy of Science's Minnesota State Regional Science Bowl held on Macalester College on January 24th 2015.  The second team also performed incredibly well (17th place).

This is the first time that Edina has competed at a science bowl and the only team with all Sophomores to make it to the top 5 in the state!  Great job!!!

Sophomore team members are: Meghana Iyer, Michael Tang, Jenny Zhang, Tommy Jiang and Lydia Reiner.

Second team members are: Sophia Litkewitsch, Madelyn Gray, Michelle Ip, James Deng and Kate Anderson.

Both teams were coached by Edina High school physics teacher Mr. Mike Roddy .

Each team plays multiple games in a round robin tournament with a chance to advance to a double-elimination championship.  The sophomore team from Edina  lost to Eden prairie in the double elimination round by only 2 points.

Great job by both the teams!

Congratulations to the EHS Green Machine

http://www.thebluealliance.com/event/2015mndu

This means that the team has been invited to the National FIRST competition in St. Louis, MO  April 22-25th!

Congratulations to the Edina Quiz Bowl Team!

Congratulations to the Edina Quiz Bowl team on their best finish in the history of Edina Quiz since the onset of the program in 2003.  The team finished with a 4th place showing in the MN High School Quiz Bowl League.  The Edina team was very ably captained by Anja Beth Swoap (12) who teamed with Jack Stanek (12), Ezra Sergent-Leventhal (12), Kenrick Bjelland (11), and Sid Ramesh (11). These are only 5 of our 16 dedicated Quiz Bowl members, and they represented Edina well with skill, class, and integrity.

Congratulations to the Edina Math Team!

Last year's State Championship Edina High School Math Team is heading to the state tournament in South St. Paul to defend its title on March 9! The team is led this year by captains Cindy Jiang (12), Alan Lu (11), and Amy Fang (12).

At the tournament, six Edina mathletes will be among the top fifty students in the state who begin the day by competing in an Invitational Event. Kenrick Bjelland (11), Cindy Jiang (12), Tommy Jiang (10), David Ma (9), Michael Tang (10), and Jenny Zhang (10) have all earned the right to participate. The best ten students in the Invitational round have the opportunity to compete for the title of Math Bowl champion by solving math problems on stage in front of hundreds of their peers. No Fear!

Edina finished the regular season second in the state to its Southwest Suburban division rival Wayzata High School.  Michael Tang (10) was the top scorer in the division, missing a perfect season by just two points. He was last year's top individual in the state and the Math Bowl champion. Currently going into the state tournament, he is behind just four individuals in the state.

Good luck Hornet Math Team!  Thanks to coaches Alex Galt and Noah Franske for your leadership!

Congratulations to our Edina Thespians!

EHS presented our One Act Play 12 Angry Jurors on stage at the Guthrie Theatre.  Several of our students were recognized in the National Individual Event Showcase:

  • Ella Williams, Abigail Swoap, Dylan Rickard, Ben Weiman, Max Kile all received the highest honor of "Accomplished" in their performance categories and are now eligible to perform at the International Thespians Festival this summer.  Congratulations!

12 other students participated in the adjudicated events and received valuable feedback.  Our tech team placed 3rd in the tech challenge and two students were recognized individually for their work:  Emily Neville and Gabby Valdivia.  Well done!

For the All-State performance of Spring Awakening, we had three cast members, three members of the pit, and two crew members.  That was the most participation by any school and the show was absolutely wonderful. Edina was well represented in that production.

Congratulations to our Boys' Alpine Ski Team - State Champions!
