Live Well, Work Well

Staff Changes
As was reported last month, Mary Scheel retired on May 24th after 28 years of service to CGF. While it is impossible to fill the void left by Mary's absence, we are excited to welcome Julie Cazet to CGF. Many of you may know Julie as a longtime resident of St. Helena, community volunteer and possibly as a part time employee of the Foundation in years past. In her new full-time position of Administrative Assistant, Julie will handle invoicing and accounts receivable, as well as a variety of other duties to keep the office running smoothly and efficiently. Daniella Ramirez will assume a more visible role in the new position of Account Manager. Dani will take on more responsibilities for the group health benefits program, including education and employee engagement, a role that will become critically important in the months (and years) ahead.
Health Care Reform - Exchanges
Beginning Jan. 1, 2014, qualifying individuals and employees of small businesses will have access to insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) health insurance Exchanges. Open enrollment under the Exchanges will begin on October 1, 2013. Employers will be required to notify employees about the availability of the Exchanges by 10/1. The Department of Labor recently released temporary guidance on the Exchange Notice Requirement and provided model notices for employers to use. The DOL also updated the COBRA election notice to include information regarding health coverage alternatives offered through the Exchanges. We will continue to monitor these requirements for revisions and formal guidance.

On May 23rd, the state of California released information about individual plans  to be offered through its Exchange, known as Covered California. A total of 13 insurance carriers have been tentatively approved to offer coverage beginning this fall for enrollment starting January 2014. Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Health Net, Kaiser and Western Health Advantage will be available in the Napa, Sonoma, Solano and Marin region. Premiums vary depending on the geographic region, the individual's age, and the richness of benefits. It is said that more than half of Californians will be eligible to receive federal subsidies on a sliding scale, extending to a family of four earning up to $94,200. Covered California is expected to announce its options for small employers through the Small Employer Health Options Program (SHOP) on June 6th.
