We are sending October eNews a bit early to be sure you have time to plan your Columbus Day weekend to include Naromi's Annual Picnic!  Be sure to bring your camera, your favorite kite, and blanket or chairs, and your signature dessert or salad to share.

We also want to tell you that Weed Warriors is cancelled for tomorrow morning and that Oblong Land Conservancy has two events you may be interested in - see below for more on all of those.

Naromi is planning a pop-up event on October 24th - keep your eyes peeled for more info soon.

The Dutchess County Ducks Unlimited Chapter will award its Conservation Award to Christopher L. J. Wood, Chair of the Oblong Land Conservancy and dedicated advocate for conservation of the Great Swamp for well over a decade.  Chris will receive this honor on Sunday September 26 at the sporting clays and conservation program
Weed Warriors Round 4  - Canceled in lieu of Vinegar and Goats
A message from Weed Warriors leader Bill McCann:
I know that this will be a disappointment to some if not all of you but there will not be a need for the the warriors to assemble this Saturday.

We have a licensed professional (Ian Gribble) coming out to treat the Knot Weed colony in the next week so we don't want to cut it. He will be using vinegar based treatment which is safe for the environment and to be used on school property. Not sure how effective it will be on the KW but we'll find out next spring. Also the barberry is ripe with seed at this time of year and as we have been chipping it back into the forest we don't want to be helping the invader to spread even more.

So we will reconvene next spring and possibly add a couple of other sites. We are hoping to have some 4 legged reinforcements at that time as well. Jess from Happy Acres Farm has been training their goats to tackle plants like barberry and multiflora rose which is a great low tech way to get rid of these invasives. Maybe we can have a competition between humans and goats to see who can get rid of the most plants in the same period of time. (I'm betting on the goats).

Thank you all for hard work this season. It is really gratifying to see that we have a good number of citizens showing deep concern for our environment and our community. We'll have plenty more fun next growing season. Thanks for "pulling for Sherman".

See you around,
Bill
