Black Trumpet Mushrooms
enjoying the change from summer to autumn.  We had a great time on Sweeetcake Mountain on Saturday - check out the photo below.

On Friday night, September 12, the Naromi Board of Directors had a meeting in which the Board elected its officers.  Marge Josephson and Michael Hertzberg were elected for another one-year term as President and Secretary.  Chris Jellen was elected to his first one-year term as Vice-President.  Stephanie Warren was elected to her first one-year term as Treasurer.  Bill Garrison stepped down from a long tenure as Treasurer.  Bill thankfully remains on the Board of Directors and will continue to serve on the Finance Committee.

Naromi is lucky to have a dedicated group of people serving on it's Board of Directors. Collectively they serve more that 200 hours per month working to fulfill Naromi's Mission to conserve and protect Sherman's natural resources for the benefit of, and use by current and future generations.
Sweetcake Mountain Hike
Naromi and New Fairfield Land Trust led a hike at NFLT's Sweetcake Mountain Preserve last Saturday before the rain began.  It was a delightful time for all of us!

The Sweetcake Mountain Preserve was donated by the children of Dorthea and Charles Fox in 2001.  This was truly a beautiful and generous gift to the citizens of New Fairfield and the crown jewel of the NFLT's properties. The preserve is located on Wood Creek Road with the parking area about a .25 mile past the intersection of Bear Mountain Road.

Paddle Squantz Pond, September 27th
Naromi has held an annual paddling trip for the past several years.  It is always a popular and fun event.  This year we are planning a paddling trip to Squantz Pond on the morning of September 27th.  We do not have an outfitter associated with this event, so it is going to be for people who have their own boats or can borrow one.

Many more details to follow.  Send an email to naromi@sbcglobal.net if you think you are interested or if you have an extra boat available for someone to borrow.

Invasive Species: Japanese Stiltgrass

Japanese Stiltgrass is an invasive plant that is easy to find at this time of year.  It is 2-3 feet tall at a maximum but is often seen shorter than that.  It resembles delicate bamboo and thrives in different conditions, full sun to dense shade, and its seeds last in the soil for several years. A study has just been published that Wolf Spiders thrive in Stiltgrass. This type of spider preys on young American Toads, reducing their survival.  One of the study's authors also point out "The invasive grass affects toads by changing interactions among native species rather than the grass having a direct effect on the native toads." See the study.
