Members, Neighbors and Friends,
We at Naromi are basking in this glorious autumn weather and looking forward to the next two weeks! We are holding a sold out hike to the quarry in Patterson operated by Peckham Industries on Saturday Oct 5 and our Annual Picnic is on Sunday Oct 13.  This year, James Eyring will fly his birds high above Hadlow Fields - don't miss it!

Many animals are busy preparing for the long winter. Bears have been very active in our area.  Have you seen them?  Have you seen evidence you think might be a bear nearby?  John Foley shared this photo of bear scat. Scat is a great way to identify animals that have been in your neighborhood.   Some are trying to take cover in our homes... This little tree frog tried to hide on the top edge of some white molding indoors, only to be escorted out.
What would he say to us?

Quarry Hike Saturday 10/5/13 at 1PM - SOLD OUT!
This hike is sold out!

Naromi Land Trust's  monthly hike will be into a large limestone quarry on the edge of the Great Swamp.  Gary Metcalf, Vice President of Peckham Industries, will give a guided tour of this working property in nearby Patterson NY, near the intersection of Routes 22 and 311.  Follow the OLC signs (Oblong Land Conservancy is holding a hike there in the morning.)

This is a rare opportunity to explore the ancient seabed of the Harlem Valley. Learn about the geology beneath The Great Swamp and how it influences the plants and wildlife found in its ecosystem.  The south-facing cut  of the quarry is dry, white limestone with large boulders.  But the north-facing cut is a hanging garden of vines and plants fed by seeps from the Great Swamp (start of the Croton River) at the top of the quarry.  Fresh water reeds are even growing in the water at the bottom of the quarry.
Picnic October 13 - Noon to 3 PM

This is a family event.  Bring a salad or dessert to share; Naromi provides burgers, hot dogs, chips, beverages.

Special this year:  James Eyring will be flying his birds of prey over the large fields.  And bring your kites to fly when the birds are not in the sky!   All of you who came to our Annual Meeting in 2010 will know this picnic is not-to-be-missed!
