Dear Members, Neighbors and Friends,
This year, for the very first time, Naromi had a delegation in Sherman's Memorial Day Parade! There were more than twenty Naromi friends and enthusiasts including a baby in a backpack to septogenarians, dogs and horse & carriage. Big thank yous to Claire Rocky for making signs modeled after the iconic Naromi trail markers, to Gretchen Briggs for the horse and carriage, and to the crowds of paradewatchers who warmly and enthusiastically welcomed us along the route!

Banners, designed by Chris Theodoros and Amanda Branson, NLT's Program Manager, revealed Naromi's new tagline: Forever. Sherman.  This represents the unique role Naromi plays in our community as the only organization that has a mandate to fulfill our Mission in perpetuity.

Please help spread the word about Naromi Land Trust and opportunities for membership by joining us on Facebook (or by forwarding this email to your interested friends and neighbors).

Sincerely,
The Naromi Land Trust

SHS Barn Sale
On your way to the 1 PM hike (see below) on Saturday, stop by the Sherman Historical Society's Barn Sale.  Due to the weather, the Barn Sale had much-abbreviated hours this past weekend.   There are still many wonderful items to find so come by and take a look from 9-3 on Saturday June 1 at the Northrup House Barn in the center of town.
Sherman Steps Up Volunteer Fair!
Come out to hike the Mallory trail and enjoy music, food and the company of good friends and neighbors at the Community Picnic, Concert, & Volunteer Fair on June 29th, from 11-2.  Come learn about volunteer opportunities with the many town commissions and community organizations that make Sherman a vibrant and livable community.

Trails Day 2011

Naromi is celebrating CT Trails Day on June 1 & 2.  CT Trails Day is a statewide event organized by Connecticut Forest & Park Association.  This year there are 259 events in 152 towns on over 560 miles of trail.  There will be outdoor activities for everyone, including hiking, biking, horseback riding, running, trail maintenance, kayaking, educational walks, bird watching, letterboxing, and more. These events are guided by knowledgeable volunteers from local hiking clubs, parks and recreation departments, state agencies, conservation organizations, historic groups, education programs, and land trusts.

On Saturday, June 1 join us at 1:00 PM to hike the Herrick Trail/Appalachian Trail. The initial part of this one-way hike will take us through the lovely Herrick Preserve and later intersect with the Appalachian Trail (AT) to Route 55. This 2.5- to 3-hour hike is moderately steep and offers scenic views of the Housatonic River Valley from three different overlooks. Please bring water, snacks; wear sturdy shoes. Meet leaders Chris Jellen and Marge Josephson at the AT parking lot on Route 55 (0.1 miles east of the NY/CT border). There will be a shuttle to the trailhead.  Rain or shine.

On Sunday, June 2, join us at 1:00 PM for a volunteer work day at the Brookland Preserve. We will be restoring and clearing trails along the Naromiyocknowhusunkatankshunk Brook on one of our oldest preserves. Come give a helping hand. Please bring plenty of water, snacks, and clippers (if you have them); wear gloves and sturdy shoes. Meet leaders Chris Jellen and Marge Josephson at the Brookland Preserve parking lot (Route 39 north to Church Road, 0.3 miles, to Crooked Furrows Road, 0.3 miles).  Rain cancels.

Turtles Crossing
Late May through June is the time of year when turtles are most often seen crossing roads and in gardens. A majority of these turtles are gravid (egg-bearing) females looking for a sandy location to nest.
Unfortunately, its also the time of year where many are crushed both deliberately and non-deliberately on black tops as well as from mowing equipment. Motorists and bicyclists who are willing to help can due so by simply moving the turtle off the road and placing it in the direction it was going. If its a large Snapping Turtle; the best way is to find a blunt object such as a branch and gently try to "push" it off the road. DO NOT pick the turtle up by its tail because severe injury can occur to the turtles spinal column. Above all, be safe and do not attempt stop traffic.

John Foley, our local turtle expert and Naromi Board Member, is looking to document Box and Wood Turtles. If any are observed crossing the road, please contact him immediately at (203) 417-7745. Any prior sighting locations would also be of much interest.
