Support Naromi!
Dear Members, Neighbors and Friends,

During 2012 the Naromi Board of Directors has been at work on Strategic Planning. During this process we revised our Mission Statement, and here we present it to you:

The Mission of Naromi Land Trust is to conserve and protect the natural resources of Sherman, including wildlife habitats, water quality, agricultural lands and scenic vistas, for the benefit of, and use by, current and future generations.

Naromi is a Sherman community institution. The Board of Directors of Naromi Land Trust is currently instituting a new committee structure of management, which will include more members in our ongoing work.

Throughout the year, we provide a robust program of hikes, workdays, educational, and community events for Sherman families and the general public. Our goal is to get people out on the land and water to see the beauty and recreational opportunities available in and around our town.

Naromi Land Trust manages more than 1,200 acres and helped protect another 600 acres; more than 12.5% of Sherman's land mass. There are thirteen preserves with trails, and more than twenty other open space preserves--we open as many of our holdings as feasible to the public for recreational enjoyment. Other areas are in active agriculture, like the many fields in hay production throughout town, or scenic.

Naromi needs your support as a member. We work hard to provide as much value as possible for our community with the membership funds we receive. In fact, 82% of all the income we receive goes directly towards our programs, with only 18% going to administration and insurance. Please support Naromi in 2012-2013 by renewing your membership or becoming a new member. Be as generous as you can to help us add trails, parking areas and expand our stewardship in Sherman. We enclose a response envelope for your convenience.

The Naromi Land Trust Board and staff join me in wishing you a joy-filled holiday season.

Most Gratefully,

  Marge Signature

Naromi Highlights 2012

Over the past year Naromi has stayed connected to our community and worked hard to fulfill our Mission through stewardship of our preserves; hikes & community events like our Annual Meeting and Annual Fall Picnic among many others; and of course through this popular eNewsletter and Facebook.  Click to see more photos and a detailed summary of all Naromi's activities.

Upcoming NLT Hikes
December Hike - Join us for a re-scheduled walk to a little known hike in New Fairfield called Pine Hill on Sunday, December 2 starting at 1 pm. We scheduled this hike for late October, but it turned out to be on the eve of Hurricane Sandy.  We will meet at the Pine Hill Road parking area at the west entrance of Pootatuck State Forest for a hike on the Sherman/New Fairfield border.  The trails lead to several rock outcroppings with views across Squantz Pond on the east edge of the Forest, as well as to the south beyond Danbury and east across Candlewood Lake.
Snowshoeing Hadlow 2/6/11 January Hike - Save the date for this hike, Sunday, January 6 starting at 1 pm.  If there is snow on the ground we will go snowshoeing, or if the ground is clear we will hike somewhere best appreciated in the winter months.

Keep an eye on Naromi's website and Facebook page for more details on these events.
Beware of Bittersweet
CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has issued a reminder to avoid using invasive plants in holiday displays.  This includes bittersweet, a woody vine with bright red berries with yellow coverings.  Using this vine in displays can spread the seed to new areas.
REMINDER: Wear Blaze Orange in the Woods!
It is now hunting season in CT.  Naromi, as well as many other land trusts in the area, allows hunting by permission on many properties.  Be sure to wear blaze orange whenever you are in the woods (Naromi properties on not) from September 15th -December 31st.  Hunting is not allowed on Sundays.
