I am a Fiesta!
In her blog this week, Jan Richardson quotes from Eduardo Galeano's Walking Words, a collection of stories inspired by Latin American folklore:
The Church says: The body is a sin.
Science says: The body is a machine.
Advertising says: The body is a business.
The body says: I am a fiesta.
I love the body's response to the Church (as institution with a capital "C"), science, and advertising! Imagine claiming the reality that your body is a celebration, a festival, a fiesta!
Galeano's words got me thinking about not just individual bodies, but also about us as the Body of Christ. What would happen if we claimed the reality that together we are a fiesta, loved and called by God? How would our communities' perception of us change? Who would be drawn into our party? How might people experience and describe us? How might the experience of fiesta change us?
A good friend tells the story of being in Spain for Holy Week last year. One of the unexpected gifts of the week was the Festival of the Stations of the Cross, which wove its way through the streets of the little village in which she was staying. While a somber fiesta to be sure, it was a powerful and profound celebration of Jesus' love for us. There she was, a foreigner who spoke no Spanish, caught up with the fiesta crowd, accepted as part of the body. It was for her an unexpected yet profound pilgrimage, one in which she experienced the body as a fiesta.
How is God calling you as the body of Christ in your community to be a fiesta?
With blessing,
Debbie Rundlett
General Presbyter
Holy Habit: Fiesta!
One of the ways that we can become a fiesta is to enter more intentionally into the divine dance of the Trinity. Whether in a solemn (as my friend's fiesta experience was in Spain) or celebratory way, the season of Lent invites us to be a fiesta as we love God and love our neighbor. How might you more intentionally celebrate this season? How will you celebrate God? How will God celebrate you? Consider ways in which you can go all-out in your celebration and be a fiesta!
