With Soulful Purpose

This week's Broadcast message comes from Joan Brode, Treasurer of Muskingum Vally Presbytery.

No matter how much or how little money we have flowing through our lives, when we direct that flow with soulful purpose--when we let our energy move to things we care about--our life lights up.
--Lynn Twist, The Soul of Money

Money has been compared to an electrical circuit. When you think about money flowing, you realize what power it has. It can carry a lot of voltage. But when we break the circuit, it loses all its power. To paraphrase Lynne Twist in "The Soul of Money," no matter how much or how little money we have flowing through our lives, when we direct that flow with soulful purpose--when we let our energy move to things we care about--our life lights up.

The churches in our presbytery are indeed generous in different ways. Many of our people have come forth with new and expressive ideas. At the September Presbytery meeting, we heard of the need for new and deepened ways of connecting with one another as the beloved community, as well as more intentional ways to gather and share ideas and resources. We heard expressions of thanks for the training that has been offered through presbytery and a desire for more. We heard the need to take our commitment to community outside the walls of our buildings.

Here are some of the ways we hope to respond to your thoughts:

  • Continued focus on our shared journey in Christ
  • Open Space at Presbytery gatherings to share and show ideas that are working in our communities
  • Big Fish, a new ministry giving expression to the artists in our communities
  • Community presentations by Ruby Paine (Bridges Out of Poverty) and Bob Lupton (author of Toxic Charity) inviting churches, educators, civic leaders and political representatives to share ideas and develop solutions for the transformation of our communities
  • Further development of coaching cohorts for Commissioned Ruling Elders, First Call pastors, and others engaged in spiritual formation and transformation
  • Technology to open our meetings to more than just those who have the time to travel to a specific location

Finally, we ask for your commitment of continued support to these plans and programs. You have always responded generously in the past, and for that we are exceedingly grateful. The Finance Team for MVP invites you (leaders and churches alike) to become participants in the future direction of Muskingum Valley Presbytery by pledging your time, talents and treasure. Just as our Lord multiplied the loaves and fishes, let Him multiply our offerings so that we in turn may serve the thousands you place before us. Please give this request prayerful consideration and respond generously from the bounty God has provided.

In Christ's service,

Joan E. Brode

Treasurer, Muskingum Valley Presbytery
