Another General Assembly begins!
The 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be held from June 14 to 21, 2014, at the COBO Center in downtown Detroit, Michigan. This biennial meeting brings together commissioners and advisory delegates from all 172 presbyteries, as well as other delegates and observers from around the world. We begin and end with worship, and in between there are celebrations, deliberations and inspirations for everyone. See the proposed docket.
Detroit, a city rediscovering its future and celebrating its rich diversity, will play host to the assembly and provide inspiration to the church. All of the general proceedings and worship will be streamed live, but you are invited to learn more here or to join us as we seek to hear scripture calling us to "abound in hope" (Romans 15:13).
Serving as commissioners from Muskingum Valley will be:
- Teaching Elder Andrew Gerhart (Veto Presbyterian Church)
- Teaching Elder Andries Coetzee (Wooster Westminster Presbyterian Church
- Ruling Elder Yvonne Williams (Wooster First Presbyterian Church)
This coming Sunday, we invite you to lift up our commissioners in prayer. Below is the commissioning prayer from the Book of Occasional Services:
Almighty God, in Jesus Christ you called disciples
and, by the Holy Spirit, made them one church to serve you.
Be with our commissioners from Muskingum Valley Presbytery
as they serve you at the 221st General Assembly of the PCUSA.
Help them to welcome new things you are doing in the world
and to respect old things you keep and use.
In their deliberation, bring about what is best for us and for all people. As they meet, let your Holy Spirit guide so that the whole church may be joined in love and service to Jesus Christ, who, having gone before us, is coming to meet us in the promise of your kingdom. Amen.
And, may the God of hope, fill us with all joy and peace in believing, that by the power of the Holy Spirit we may abound in hope! (Romans 15:13).
Bless us all in our living and our service!
Together in Christ,
Debbie Rundlett
General Presbyter

Holy Habit: Go with God
This week, take some time to prayerfully reflect on the foundations of the Book of Order (Don't have one? Here is the link to download a copy for free: http://store.pcusa.org/OGA13010).
As you'll find, even our governance begins with the missio Dei - God's own "self-sending" in Christ by the Spirit to redeem and transform creation. As Presbyterians have long known, the Church is not a building or an institution, but a community of witness, called into being and equipped by God, and sent into the world to testify to and participate in Christ's work. The Church does not have missions; instead, the mission of God creates the Church. The Church serves God's call to mission through its work in three broadly defined categories: the proclamation of the Word of God, the administration of the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper, and the nurture of the covenant community of disciples. It undertakes this mission without regard for its own agenda or survival (from Paul Hooker, A Missional Ecclessiology).
How is God calling you?
