Compassion
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. -- Colossians 3:12
The root meaning of compassion is "to suffer with." Compassion is not for the faint of heart -- it can hurt to care! There is a cost to opening ourselves up to others and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable. As we begin this Lenten season, we know that suffering and death are stopping points on the road to the empty tomb: to resurrection.
Of course, to not care is even more costly. We end up seeing the world through the lens of our fears and prejudices. Daniel Goleman, in his research, has found that:
"Self-absorption in all its forms kills empathy, let alone compassion. When we focus on ourselves, our world contracts as our problems and preoccupations loom large. But when we focus on others, our world expands. Our own problems drift to the periphery of the mind and so seem smaller, and we increase our capacity for connection - or compassionate action." (Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships).
When we cut-off from others, we do harm not only to our relationships, but also to ourselves. Our awareness of self and others becomes distorted. With isolation comes a judgmental brittleness.
It is important to note the difference between isolation and solitude. Where solitude removes distractions and draws one into a deeper relationship with God and others, isolation leaves one feeling alienated and alone.
It has been said that compassion is empathy in action. In times of deep change, this calls for creativity. It can be hard to care for wounded and hurt people. Anger is often used as a defense to push people away. Compassion demands not only understanding and empathy, but also a willingness to act on those feelings of care. Such caring calls for resilience in the face of struggle, even as it provides renewal to those who persevere through the challenges.
This Lent, instead of pondering what to give up, I invite you to consider clothing yourself with compassion.
Lenten blessings for the journey!

Holy Habit: Clothing Yourself with Compassion
This next week, ask God to place the name of a person in need of compassion on your heart. Set aside some time to imagine a day in their life from when they get up to when they go to bed. What is going on in their life that brings joy? Are there particular frustrations (or fears, or challenges) that are impacting them? Who do they interact with over the course of the day? What are their wounds and wonderings? What is important to them? Picture them with specificity. Then ponder:
- What did you notice?
- Where there any surprises? Any concerns?
Spend time with God in prayer for this person. Ask God, how you might intentionally clothe them with compassion. Act on your prayer.

An Exciting Choral Opportunity for Our Youth
Hello!
We have an exciting opportunity for youth in your presbytery!
I am contacting presbytery offices to ask their assistance in sharing the invitation for youth to sing for opening worship at General Assembly on Saturday morning, June 14, in Detroit, Michigan.
I have attached a letter from our committee, and I would appreciate your sharing this letter with your congregations or individuals within your presbytery who might know of potentially interested youth. In addition to sharing the information with congregations, you may know specific pastors, musicians or youth leaders who would share this information.
Our invitation is extended to individual youth in a congregation and to youth choirs. This opportunity might be something a youth in a small church with no youth choir would appreciate, or there might be youth choirs in your synod who would like to make southeastern Michigan a destination for a music-and-mission trip.
I sang with the choir for worship at General Assembly many years ago. What a great experience it was for me to worship God with thousands of Presbyterians. I hope you'll encourage youth in your presbytery to have a similar experience.
Please let me know if I can be of any assistance.
Thank you so much!
