The Power of Unreasonable People
"Being unreasonable is not just a state of mind. It is also a process by which older, outdated forms of reasoning are jettisoned, and new ones conceived and evolved."
The Power of Unreasonable People (Loc. 177)
Power can be used to do great good or wreck havoc and destruction. Each of us is responsible for what we do with the power entrusted to us. To be sure, there has been widespread abuse of power in the church and there has also been the failure to rightly use power in response to evil. But still, there remains potential for great good. Gifts and strengths come with a responsibility to make a difference, to breath new life into people and communities. The Power of Unreasonable People shares stories of social and environmental entrepreneurs who have provided the catalytic energy and vision to make transformation real.
What sets these entrepreneurs apart from their counterparts is their "unreasonableness," which includes:
- Their desire to change the system: "They spot dysfunction in the current system, and unlike reasonable people who accommodate themselves to the status quo, they try to work out how to transition the system's equilibrium to a different and more functional state" (Loc. 336).
- They are insanely ambitious, but not for themselves, for the greater goal;
- They are propelled by emotion and use the energy born of emotion to accomplish what others believe to be impossible;
- They think they know the future: "They know the best way to predict the future is to create it and the best way to build momentum-and attract funding and other resources-is to develop and communicate a clear vision of how things might be different" (Loc. 368).
- They seek profit in unprofitable pursuits (example: the Grameeen Bank who has helped seven million people; 97% of whom are women).
Their focus is on investment, not charity. This is an important lesson for the church as charity gets in the way of empowerment. Investment, by contrast, seeks to create the context whereby individuals are equipped and empowered to grow and take responsibility for their contribution to the whole. For this reason, these entrepreneurs seek to measure the un-measurable, demanding return on a triple bottom line as they seek a deep social return on investment. They do so through three models in particular: leveraged non-profit, hybrid non-profit, and social business.
Many would say that these entrepreneurs are unqualified for the work they do; they would argue that this is precisely their strength. They know they can't do it alone and depend upon the full giftedness of the community. Hope comes alive when the power of unreasonable people is unleashed. Strengths, a commitment to lifelong learning, risk taking combine to make possible a new heaven and a new earth. Being unreasonable is at the heart of the gospel call.
This new year, may we dare to be just a little bit unreasonable for the sake of kingdom of God!

Holy Habit: Taking the Journey
Transformation involves body, mind and soul... the whole person in service to the good of the whole. Full potential-be it of individual or community-can only be realized through the intersection of passion, strengths, and the resources of the community. Yet, with the best of intentions, we have too often over-focused on the gaps and the deficits within both individual and system.
As Peter Drucker reminds us, the challenge before us is to develop our strengths in such a way that our weaknesses become irrelevant. Community-based transformation is never easy. It involves courage, risk and sacrifice. But the promise of a "new heaven and new earth" is not just words; it is power. The church has within itself the power to embody this vision.
Confirmation of this movement toward the positive core can be found in the serendipitous grace of diverse disciplines converging upon the same truth: We are "fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14). The heart of our call is to claim our strengths and name our passions in such a way that we might serve with energy, intelligence, imagination and love. In the words of early church father, Gregory of Nyssa: "Sin happens whenever we stop growing." May we never stop growing toward our potential to do good through the engagement of our strengths in partnership with others for the sake of the world.
Mark your calendar-if it is not already marked-and plan to join us for The Journey.

Attention MVP Clerks of Session:
2013 Session Statistical Report and Clerk's Annual Questionnaire are now available!
"It's the most wonderful time of the year!" And for the Clerks of Session of MVP's congregations, this means that it's time for 2013 reports to be prepared and filed with denominational staff in Louisville.
A software issue that had threatened to delay the opening of the online filing system into January has been fixed and is now open. The 2013 statistical report form and accompanying instructions can be downloaded from the website of the Office of the General Assembly (http://oga.pcusa.org/stats).
Both experienced and new session clerks should read through the instructions and the new FAQ section before starting to fill in the form. This will help answer most if not all of the questions about completion and submission of the statistical report. Additional help is available by contacting MVP Mission Coordinator Candice McMath here at the MVP Mission Center (330-339-5515).
Please remember that since this annual statistical report is a report of the session, the completed report cannot be filed before it has been reviewed and approved by the session (not the congregation), as soon as possible after December 31, 2013.
The Clerk's Annual Questionnaire is available on the same web site as listed above and provides important information for the denominational research staff. This is does not need to be approved by the session or congregation before it is submitted. Again, questions about this form can be answered by contacting Candice.
Copies of the completed Session Statistical Report and Clerk's Annual Questionnaire should be retained as part of the congregation's records. It is not necessary that copies be filed with the MVP Mission Center. For those session clerks who do not have internet access, draft reports and questionnaires can be mailed to the MVP Mission Center and will be filed on their behalf.
Last year there was considerable confusion about the completion and submission of these important reports and questionnaires. We apologize for this and anticipate a much smoother process this time. Our goal is a 100% completion / filing rate this year. Although no prizes will be awarded, we ask for the cooperation of every session clerk in our presbytery in this reporting process.

Prayer Requests/Updates
-
It is with heavy hearts that we request prayers for the Cureton family, and announce the passing of Mary Cureton. Mary went to be with her Savior yesterday, December 17, 2013. She was the wife of Rev. Charles Cureton (HR) and they attended First Presbyterian Church of Wooster, where Charles continues to serve as parish associate.
A memorial service has been scheduled for 11:00 am on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church in Wooster. All are invited to attend. (Photo credit/courtesy of Jon Carlisle)
- We are saddened to announce the passing of G. Kenneth Shafer (HR) and request prayers for his family.
The Rev. Dr. G. Kenneth Shafer, Jr (84) went home to be with The Lord on Wednesday, December 25, 2013 surrounded by his family. He is survived by Florence, his loving wife of 61 years, son Kenneth E. Shafer of Wooster, OH, daughter Linda (and Randy) Shadoe of San Jose, CA, son Jeffrey D. (and Laura) Shafer of Vestal, NY, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
His life was devoted to serving The Lord as a Presbyterian pastor. During his ministry he served churches in West Carrollton, OH, Danville, IL, Royal Oak, MI, Cleveland, OH, Columbus,OH, and Cincinnati, OH. He also served as a full-time interim pastor at churches in Bryan, Fairborn, Zanesville, Bluffton, Akron, and Mt. Gilead, OH and part-time interim pastorates in Amanda, Logan, Newark, Pickerington, and Columbus, OH. He was active in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and served on various committees at the Presbytery and Synod levels. He also was a past president of the Interfaith Counseling Center of Columbus, OH.
He enjoyed his family, sports, classical music, was an avid reader, and volunteered his time in many community organizations.
There will be a private memorial service for the immediate family on Friday, December 27, 2013 with burial to follow at Wooster Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by McIntire Bradham & Sleek Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to People to People Ministries, 454 E. Bowman St, Wooster, OH, 44691. A public celebration of his life is being planned for the spring.
- Please remember Pleasant Hill Outdoor Camp in your prayers. This prayer request is for clear direction and wisdom from the Lord as they move forward with preparations to build a home for the director and his family and as they prepare for 2014 summer camps.
If you or someone you know has a prayer request,
please send them to Candice at
