Now Thank We All Our God!
It was 1636, in the midst of the darkness of the Thirty Years' War. A German pastor, Martin Rinkart, is said to have buried five thousand of his parishioners in that one year, an average of fifteen funerals a day. His parish was ravaged by war, death, and economic disaster. In the heart of that darkness, with the cries of fear outside his window, he sat down and wrote this table grace for his children:
Now thank we all our God,
With heart and hands and voices;
Who, from our mother's arms,
Hath led us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.
Here was a man who knew thanksgiving comes from love of God, not from outward circumstances. Just fifteen years earlier the Pilgrims had celebrated the first Thanksgiving. They, also, were acknowledging their gratitude to God for God's "countless gifts of love."
Whether expressed in the joy of plenty or the agony of desperation, it is a good thing to give thanks to God. Giving thanks is evidence of faith. Thanksgiving reveals the depth of our fellowship. Clearly God's people have evidenced deep thanksgiving through the centuries, both in times of plenty and want.
But, are we truly thankful? Do we practice thanksgiving not only in the good times but also in the hard times? Do we take time to thank God when it is easy? Are we able to thank Him when it is hard? Do we understand what our forebears instinctively knew: that there is no scarcity except in our souls and that gratitude is the heart's memory?
We who are daily besieged with the insidious disease of scarcity (of not having enough), we who find ourselves and enslaved to the stuff of our lives would do well to remember who and whose we are. We were created for a purpose. We are not our own.
Here in MVP, we share a call to journey with Jesus to touch the world: empowered by the Spirit to make disciples, nurture our faith, and serve the needs of the community! May we embody Christ as we live that call!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Debbie Rundlett
General Presbyter

Holy Habit: Gratitude
This Thanksgiving Day as you gather with family and friends, take time to give thanks for the many, many ways in which God has blessed you in your life and that of your family.

From the General Assembly of the PC(USA)
Credit Card Alert: Alleged PC(USA) Credit Cards
Recently, the mission office of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was contacted by someone who received a mailing from the Pacific Capital Companies, LLC. The mailing contained a credit card issued in the name of the recipient and under her name appeared "Presbyterian Church USA." The recipient does not work for the PC(USA), did not contact Pacific Capital Companies, LLC, and did not request a credit card from Pacific Capital Companies, LLC.
Anyone who receives a letter notification with a credit card attached that includes "Presbyterian Church USA" and an invitation to activate such a card is warned that the PC(USA) does not have an agreement with Pacific Capital Companies, LLC or any other bank or company to issue credit cards to people who are not employed with the PC(USA) national office. People who receive an invitation notice to activate a card with PC(USA) on it are advised to disregard it and to cut up the credit card included in the mailing. The PC(USA) has notified federal authorities of this matter. Those who receive such cards are welcome to contact the Legal Services office of the Presbyterian Mission Agency at (502) 569-5278.

From Rev. Ester Wakeman, Ph.D.
A Letter from Thailand
Dear friends,
The weather is cooler, Payap's graduation approaches and with it the first meeting of our new Board. They have a big job to do--find our next president. Please pray that God will bless us with the leader we need for these challenging times in Thailand.
And may God bless you richly as we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas. We're looking forward to more family moving to Chiang Mai. My father will join us for the winter again, and Rob's son, John, and his family are moving here to assist with the amazing ministry of McKean Rehabilitation Hospital.
Esther

Prayer Requests/Updates
-
A Call to Prayer for the Philippines: The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) deeply grieves the devastation and loss in the Republic of the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda). The denomination is actively responding through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and its partners, and also is calling for prayer. Click on the link above to access the PCUSA website for specific prayers and disaster assistance.
- Please remember Pleasant Hill Outdoor Camp in your prayers. This prayer request is for clear direction and wisdom from the Lord as they move forward with preparations to build a home for the director and his family and as they prepare for 2014 summer camps.
If you or someone you know has a prayer request,
please send them to Candice at
